Biography

He started out and finished his adult life as a farmer. In about 1909, he gave up farming and opened a dry-goods store near the train depot in Moncure, Chatham County, North Carolina; he was related in one way or another to nearly everyone there. He became active in politics and was an enthusiastic supporter of Theodore Roosevelt. In about 1913, he was a cofounder of the First Baptist Church of Moncure. By 1918, he was once again engaged in farming. In 1919, he and his immediate family moved to Pittsboro, the county seat of Chatham County; he purchased a property there known as Dennison Grove. Between 1919 and 1932, he was Register of Deeds for Chatham County. At the time of the 1920 U.S. Census, he and his immediate family were living on Island Ford Road, Haw River Township, Chatham County. In 1932, he moved with his wife Robena and some of their children to the Poe family farm near Moncure; much of that site was inundated when the Jordan Dam was built, but the place where the actual homestead had been located is now an island in Jordan Lake. "Charlie" was for many years the unofficial historian of the descendants of Jesse Poe. He retained an excellent memory well into old age. He is buried in the cemetery in Gum Springs, near Moncure.

His draft registration from World War I describes him as tall, medium build, with gray eyes and dark hair.
