Name

The GEDCOM from which this profile was formed provided the information that John was also known as Stumpy, but no support was given.

Birth

The GEDCOM file from which this profile was formed, entered his date of birth as 8 AUG 1778, in Surry County, North Carolina, citing p. 116 of a record of the Comstock-Haggard families by Mary Jane Comstock.^[1] LIkewise, John's Find A Grave memorial lists the birthdate of 8 Aug 1778, but has no burial details nor any picture of a headstone.^[2] This remains an approximation.

Marriage

John married Sarah James on 29 January 1801 in Stokes, Pitt, North Carolina, United States.^[3]

Census Records and Residence History

In 1810, John was living in Surry County, NC.^[4]

In 1850, he and Sarah were heads of household, with their daughter Elizabeth (Poindexter) Truelove and what appears to be her three children living with them in Surry County, NC.^[5]

By 1860, John (81) had moved to Yadkin, NC, to live with Elizabeth.^[6]

Death

The date of death can be found on the unsourced Find A Grace memorial.^[7] The date also comes from a genealogy forum about the Poindexter family, but it is unclear whether there is any source to support the date of 4 October 1863.^[8] The probate of his will is dated 1864.^[9]

Slaves

In his probate file, it is recorded that A. C. Baker bought from the estate a Negro woman named Amelia and her child for $3000.^[10]

Elizabeth Poindexter, daughter of John & Sarah, is believed to have died unmarried.

Martha "Patsy" Poindexter, another daughter, married Austin Truelove - she died 1833; her children apparently lived with their grandparents.

John was born in 1778. He married Sarah James 29 Jan 1801 in Stokes County, North Carolina.^[11]

In 1850 he was head of household, age 71. His wife Sarah was age 70. His presumed daughter Elizabeth C M E Poindexter was age 46. Also in the household were grandchildren Sarah E. Trulove age 20; Martha P Trulove age 16 and John G. Trulove age 18.^[12]

In 1860 John was age 81. His daughter Elizabeth was age 58. Also in the household was Cornella Morler, age 20.^{[13] [14]}
