Biography
David was born and lived for two years in Colorado, then 8 years in Iowa, before moving to Texas in 1988. David is a common name in my family, shared among many men including my great uncle David Meppen who had a passion for genealogy research.
Among the interesting things I have discovered about my ancestry:
- My surname "Polkinghorn" originated in Cornwall, England. My great great grandfather William Polkinghorn came from Cornwall at age 11 in 1870 after his father died, arriving with his brother Stephen and mother Mary Ann. Generations of Polkinghorns were copper miners, a tradition that they brought with them to the boomtowns of upper Michigan.
- My genealogy heritage: 25% English, 25% Swedish, 18.75 German, 31.3% unknown.
- First cousin spouses (eww!) in my line include 3g grandfather Louis Brauer to Louise (Toel) Brauer -- their mothers were sisters!
- I have a collection of original letters belonging to my 3g grandfather David Luther Carpenter which I plan to digitize and post online for all to access.
- My wife's family has extended roots in Menard County, Texas, population 2,200. The rich history of this area was documented through a large community effort in 1982, resulting in the book "Menard County History -- An Anthology", 1982. I'm transcribing biographies and posting family photographs to Wikitree that were contributed by those families who wished to honor and preserve the heritage of their ancestors, who settled the western frontier.
