William was the son of William Poppleton (b. c 1735) and Mary Stocks. The family lived in Crowland, Lincolnshire, and attended St. Guthlac Church there.
William married 1st to Elizabeth Bycraft, widow of Thomas Day (also known as Thomas Parkinson), on 13 May 1789 in St. Mary's Church in Whaplode, Lincolnshire, England. Elizabeth died in January of 1802.
They had seven children. The oldest, Elizabeth, married Thomas Hardy. The second oldest, John, married Ann Lovely. The third oldest, William, married Mary Bannister.
The four youngest children (James, Mary, Mary, and Mary) all died soon after birth. The youngest Mary (the third daughter they named Mary) died the day she was born and her mother, Elizabeth, followed soon after.
William married 2nd to Mrs. Mary Smith, widow, on 14 Mar 1803 in All Saints Church, Moulton, Lincolnshire, England.
