Biography

Edwin's first wife was Mehetabel Hughes, according to his granddaughter Mary Willis Dold. See also Henry Porter Andrews (1893), claiming the maiden name of Edwin's wife was Hughes.[1]

Edwin married Mary Wyllis in New Haven, Connecticut, [2] in 1818.[3]

Family tradition claims that she was Mary Whiting Willis (1793-1848). Mary Willis Dold also records that her grandmother Mary Willis Porter was a good friend of Mehetabel Hughes.

Edwin and Mary W. had five children.[4]

  1. Mehatable Hughes b. 1821
  2. Cornelia Willis b. 1823 d. 1825[5]
  3. Mary Cornelia b. 1826
  4. Edwin Huburtus b. 1829[6]
  5. Harriet Belden b. 1833

Timeline

According to family tradition, Edwin moved several times:

  1. 1817 To Richmond, Virginia
  2. 1833 To Washington DC
  3. 1839 To Lewisburg, (then) Virginia
  4. 1845 To Lexington, Virginia
  5. Then, after some years, to Strawberry Hill near Richmond Virginia

Research Notes

Is this ancestor the the Edwin Porter named as a contractor "for carrying the mail from Staunton, in Virginia, to Catlettsburgh, Kentucky..." in an 1834 Post Office Department Report? See Alexandria Gazette, Volume 10, Number 3655, 14 June 1834, Page 2

Searching "Edwin Porter" in Readex turns up a dry goods merchant Edwin Porter of Bridgeport Connecticut in the 1820s, and Edwin Porter of Richmond, Virginia, married to Mary Wyllis and advertising a lost horse (Richmond Enquirer, Volume 23, Number 5, 26 May 1826, Page 3, Col 6, ("Stop the Horse Thief: $30 Reward"))
