Biography

Marie Potet was born about 1657 in Port Royal, Acadia. Her father is not known, but there is speculation that he could be Jean Potet.[1] Her stepfather was Michel Dupuis, the second husband of Marie Gautrot[2]

Marie (17) married Martin Bourg (24) (born about 1650 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France; son of Antoine Bourg and Antoinette Landry) in 1675 in Cobequid, Acadie.[1] Their known children were:[1]

  1. Marie Bourg (abt. 1676– ) .
  2. Abraham Bourg (abt. 1678–aft. 1733) .
  3. Pierre Bourg (abt. 1682– ) .
  4. Jeanne Bourg (abt. 1684–aft. 1752) .
  5. Ambroise Bourg (1686–1763) .
  6. François Bourg (abt. 1688– ) .
  7. Anne Marie Bourg (abt. 1691–1766) .
  8. Marie Madeleine Bourg (abt. 1694–aft. 1755) .
  9. Charles Bourg (abt. 1698–bef. 1761) .
  10. Unknown Bourg (1700– ) .
  11. Unknown Bourg (abt. 1702– )

Their first child was born in 1675; her age was three in 1678, though in 1686 she was said to have been born in 1676. The same 1686 census said the second child was born in 1679, although he was actually six months old in the 1678 census.[3]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Marie POTET, aged 29, was living with her husband, Martin BOURC [sic], aged 36, and their four children: Marie, aged 10, Abraham, aged 7, Pierre, aged 5, and Jeanne, aged 2. The family owned 1 gun and was living on 3 arpents of cultivable land with 4 cattle, 5 sheep, and 6 hogs.[4]

By 1693 they had quite a bit of property (30 arpents) and three more children.[5] Finally, in 1698, their family was complete, with baby Charles just six months old. By then, the oldest daughter had married and moved out.[6] The family was still in Port Royal in 1700. Although their children Madeleine and Charles were not listed at that time, it is possible they did live to marry and have children of their own.[7]

Martin and Marie were next found in Cobequid in 1707. There they had three boys under age fourteen, which would have included Charles (age nine) and two more younger boys, their names unknown.[8]

According to the Declarations of Belle-ile-en-Mer, Marie died in Cobiquit, no date given.[9]

Potet-12 and Potet-1 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, husband and son François. Same date of death.

White does name her father as Unknown Potet, "perhaps" the first husband of Marie Gautrot Jean Potet dit La Fortune. Good question--thanks for posting Cindy.

Is there a source for the father Jean? White does not name a father, there is none of this family on the census image attached (that I can find), and in the translation there is a Guillaume Poulet, wife and 1 child which wouldn't match this family composition or be enough proof of the right family. From his profile it seems his first name should be Unknown.
