Margaret was likely born around 1690 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of George Pott and his wife Joan (whose surname is currently unknown).
According to tradition, her mother was pregnant with Margaret when she travelled from Montgomeryshire, Wales to Pennsylvania in 1690. Her father is said to have died enroute, either with them, or on a separate ship that sailed ahead of them. It is also said that Margaret had three older sisters, although their name is unknown.
Richard and Margaret were married in 1712[1][2] among the Friends of the Kennett Monthly Meeting (previously known as Newark Monthly Meeting).[3][4] The meeting minutes dated 1st month, 1, 1712 record, “Richards Cocks Requestiong of this meeting a Certificate in Relation to marriage wth a ffriend belonging to ye Monthly Meeting at Abington in ye County of Philada. Thomas Wikershap & Wm. Horne are appointed to Enquire into his clearness in Relation to marriage or otherwise & make report to ye next mo meeting.” Wickersham and Horne found nothing against him and they ordered the Certificate to be granted. The 3rd month (May), 26th day of 1712, the minutes of the Abington Monthly Meeting recorded, “Whereas Richard Cox, of Kennet Monthly Meeting in ye County of New Castle, and Margaret Potts, having declared their Intentions of Marrriage with each other; before two Monthly Meetings, Enquiry being made by persons appointed and found clear from all others on ye account of Marriage. Did accomplish their marriage in ye Unity of Friends as signified by their Marriage Certificate.” The account book of Francis Daniel Pastorius showed a charge on May 4, 1712, against Richard Cox of Kennet in Chester County, for a “Marriage Certificate with Margaret Potts.”[5]
The Society of Friends recorded all dates with numbers, rather than names of months. The original Quaker records tell us the marriage took place in the 3rd month and some call it March, others May. At this time in history, the 3rd month was May, March being the 1st month.
