Biography

Harriet was born in 1865 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, the daughter of Edward Preece and Phebe Gadd.

In the 1871 census Harriet was living with her parents and siblings at Rowley Village, Rowley Regis. She was aged 5 years.

In 1881 Harriet was working as a general domestic servant in the home of James Beasley, G.P., and family, at 6 Siviters Lane, Rowley Regis. She was aged 15.

Harriet emigrated to Australia, sailing aboard the Liguria, leaving from London for Sydney in December 1886.

Harriet Preece married Crispin Charles Franz Raybould in 1888 at Queensland. Crispin was her cousin, the son of Ann Raybould, Phoebe Preece's older sister.

This couple had three children named Harold Preece Raybould born 3 June 1895, William Thomas Raybould born 10 May 1897 and Ethel Harriet Raybould born 31 July 1899.

Son Harold died on 15 January 1896 in infancy.

From as early as 1888 Crispin was mentioned in the local newspapers as being a member of the Brisbane Grocers' Association.

A public notice in the Brisbane Courier dated 16 August 1898, Pg 2 advised customers which grocers and provision dealers would be closing at 1 o’clock on Wednesdays following the establishment of a weekly half-holiday in Brisbane and suburbs. Listed under the heading PETRIE-TERRACE AND PADDINGTON was C. Raybould, Given-terrace.

From Brisbane Courier dated 2 April 1894, Pg 5 - An interesting farewell social was held on Friday night last at the Paddington Wesleyan Church for the purpose of wishing the Rev. T. Ellison success in his new sphere of work at Mount Morgan, and to present him with a tea and coffee service in view of his approaching marriage with Miss Bytheway, daughter of Alderman Bytheway, of Gympie. The church was filled with an audience composed of adherents from all parts of the Enoggara circuit, and the meeting was presided over by Mr. Fletcher, as senior circuit steward. Addresses were delivered by the chairman for the circuit in general, and by Messrs Raybould and Harris for the Paddington and Kennedy-terrace churches in particular.

In 1906 it was reported the late Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist congregations had amalgamated and were to rebuild a new church on the then current site of the Primitive Methodist church. The Wesleyan church site had already been sold. An outline of the history of the Wesleyan Church was written by Mrs Cooling Snr and read by Mr Raybould at the final meeting of the church.

Newspaper articles over the following years confirmed Crispin's continuing membership of the Methodist church through to his death.

It was also reported in the Brisbane Courier dated 9 June 1900, Pg 8, that C. Raybould had been elected as one of 8 vice presidents of the Ithaca Volunteer Fire Brigade.

18 August 1899, Pg 2 - SERVANTS WANTED. GENERAL Servant wanted, small family, good home. Mrs. Raybould, next Foresters’ Hall, Paddington. [Foresters’ Hall was in Latrobe Terrace.]

In the 1903 and 1905 electoral rolls Crispin and Harriet were living at Latrobe Terrace, Paddington, Brisbane. Crispin was a storekeeper.

In 1905 Crispin, alone, returned to the United Kingdom for a visit, sailing on the Persic from Sydney to London. He was then aged 41 and listed as a grocer.

He returned aboard the Afric, departing London on 31 August 1905 and arriving in Sydney on 21 October 1905. On this trip Crispin was described as an engineer.

The Brisbane Courier dated 23 July 1907, Pg 2 reported that Bro C. Raybould had been installed as the chaplain of the Masonic Lodge Celtic, No. 810, S.C. in their ceremony for the installation of officers that had taken place at Norman Hall, Red Hill the previous Saturday night.

The entire family returned to England for 18 months in 1910-11. They left from Sydney, arriving in Plymouth on 17 April 1910 aboard the White Star S.S. Suevic. Crispin was incorrectly named as Mr A Raybould, aged 46, a grocer. The other members of the family were identified as Mrs Harriet aged 35 [should read 45], Master William aged 11 [should read 13] and Miss Ethel aged 10.

At the time of the 1911 English census the family was living at 7 Oak St, Kingswinford, Staffordshire. Crispin, aged 47, stated he was a retired grocer. Harriet was aged 45, William aged 13 and Ethel aged 11.

The family left England from Liverpool aboard the White Star S.S. Afric on 19 October 1911, bound for Sydney.

In the 1913 electoral roll Crispin and Harriet were living at Given Terrace, Paddington and Crispin had returned to being a grocer.

All four family members appeared in the 1921, 1925 and 1936 electoral rolls, living at Shenston, Given Terrace, Paddington. Both Crispin and William were grocers. Ethel was a teacher.

From the Queensland Times dated 27 December 1923, Pg 4 – STORE BURGLED. C. Raybould’s store, at Latrobe-terrace, Paddington, was entered on Sunday evening, and the safe broken open. The cash box, papers and bank book and about 15/ in coppers were taken. The cash box and bank book were discovered in the locality on Monday evening. It is thought that an entry was forced through a fanlight at the rear of the premises.

Crispin and Harriet made a further trip home to the United Kingdom in 1924. Crispin aged 60, a merchant, and Harriet, aged 58, departed from Brisbane on the Esperance Bay and arrived on 29 March 1924 in Southampton. Their proposed address on arrival was 46 Belgrave Rd, Blackheath. They then departed from London on the 26 August 1924, once again aboard the Esperance Bay, bound for Brisbane. Ship records show they had been staying at The Ingle, Bromley Lane, Kingswinford [David Raybould’s home, Crispin’s brother] prior to departure.

From The Brisbane Courier dated 24 August 1931, Pg 15 [in part] – The second annual horticultural and industrial show of the Paddington Methodist circuit was officially opened by Mr. C. Raybould on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Raybould complimented the exhibitors on the general excellence of their entries. ...

In 1935 Crispin was elected to the committee of the Queensland Grocers’ Association [Brisbane Courier-Mail dated 1 May 1935, Pg 18].

Crispin Charles Franz Raybould died on 28 February 1937.

RAYBOULD. The Friends of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Grant and Family are invited to attend the Funeral of their deceased Brother, Brother-in-law, and Uncle, Mr. C. Raybould, to leave his late residence, Shenston, 326 Given Terrace, Paddington, This (Monday) Afternoon, at 4.30 o’clock, for the Toowong Cemetery.

The latter is Crispin's sister Phebe and her husband Thomas Grant.

And on 5 October 1937, Pg 20 – PROBATE GRANTED. Probate has been granted of the Wills of the following – [included] Crispin Charles Franz Raybould, late of Paddington, Brisbane, grocer, realty £826, personalty £6140. The amounts are gross.

Harriet Raybould died on 15 May 1938.

And on 28 October 1938, Pg 16 – PROBATE GRANTED. Probate has been granted of the Wills of: [included] Harriet Raybould, Paddington, widow, realty £1966, personalty £7046. The amounts are gross.

Crispin, Harriet and sons Harold and William were all buried at Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane [Portion 9, Section 9, Plots 19 and 20].
