Mary was the daughter of William Henry "Bill Hen" and Delphia McCoy Preece; granddaughter of William Thomas "Red Tom" and Piety Lowe McCoy, and of Sherman and Mary Preece; and great-granddaughter of Tamsey Elizabeth McCoy, and of Fountain Bird, Sr., and Judy "Granny" Staton Lowe. Her siblings were Avery, Sherman Thomas, James Harvey, Lillian, Parlee, Ann, Hazel, Bill Joe, Rosa Faye and John Henry.
