Biography

Joshua Prescott was born on March 1, 1669 in Hampton, Norfolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony, which is today Hampton, New Hampshire. He was the son of James Sr. and Mary (Boulter) Prescott.

According to Charles Thornton Libby in his Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, p. 151, Joshua married Sarah Clifford on October 12, 1710. In his The Prescott Memorial, Dr, William Prescott describes on p. 231 that Joshua did not marry until about 40 years old, which Dr. Prescott further stated was common in this Prescott family. Birth dates of Joshua and Sarah's children testify to his late marriage:

Joshua and Sarah had at least the following six (6) children:

  1. Nathan b. about 1710 or '11; m. March 30, 1736. Usley Ward of Marlboro', Mass., dau. of Samuel and Mary Ward, and b. Aug. 30, 1711. He res. in Kensington and East Kingston, N. H. We find him taxed in East Kingston, from 1757 to 1764. His name is on a petition to the Legislature, with sundry other inhabitants of Kingston, in 1732. He d. in 1764; his son, Stephen, was appointed administrator to his estate, Nov. 9, 1764. After the Revolution. his widow removed with her son Stephen, to Deerfield, N. IL, where she d. in 1807, a. 96 years.
  2. Joshua b. about 1713; m. 1st, Abigail Ambrose, and had four sons and four daughters. She d. and he m. for a second wife, Mary Moulton, about 1763. About this time, he removed from East Kingston to Chester, N. 11., where he d. July 12, 1785. By his second wife, Mary, he had five sons; served six months in the expedition against Crown Point in 1758. Ile signed the Association Test at Chester in 1776.
  3. Mary b. 1715; m. Moses Shaw, Mardi 25, 1742. She d. at Kensington, Aug. 31, 1799, a. 84.
  4. Edward b. 1717; m. Elizabeth Prescott, (70-1). July 9, 1741. She was dam of Jeremiah (22-1) and Hannah Philbrick, and baptized Aug. 20, 1721; he was baptized and admitted to the church, May 21, 1758; served in the war of the Revolution in 1776 and '7, and d. 1804, a. 87.
  5. Annie, b. about 1719; in. John Wells, Nov. 26, 1746.
  6. Reuben, b. 1721; m. Alice Daniels of Salisbury, Mass., Nov. 15, 1749. Admitted to the church, July 31, 1748.

Because Sarah is presented as having died on Dec. 5, 1721 (Find A Grave: Memorial #104870557), Joshua and 2nd wife (unknown) are presumed to be parents of the following children:

  1. Patience, b. 1724; baptized Sept. 11, 1748; m. Daniel Beede, Jan. 2G, 1750.
  2. John, b. 1726, baptized at East Kingston, April 25, 1748, when a young man, and died soon after.
  3. A daughter, b. about 1728, d. Aug. 19, 1735.
  4. A daughter, b. 1730, d. Aug. 21, 1735. Both of these children died of the throat distemper which prevailed, and was very malignant and fatal at Kingston, at that time.
  5. An infant, died a few days old, July 19, 1733.

What is known is that Joshua had a change in residence sometime between 1722 and 1725 when he removed from Hampton Falls to Kingston, New Hampshire, an 11-mile distance, which might indicate a life-changing event precipitated his relocation. His change in residence was per town and church records, the latter year being when he became a record member of the Kingston church.

Joshua passed away in Kingston, New Hampshire, which is that part known today as East Kingston. He died after 1733, likely in Massachusetts when his last infant son died.

Research Notes

  • May have died in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Need to check place.
  • Note: Some family trees present wife Sarah (Clifford) as having died in 1733, not on Dec. 5, 1721 as provided in her Memorial. Confirming her date of death and/or a 2nd wife of Joshua would be a next phase of research.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joshua by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joshua:
