Issues

  • No proof of Phillip’s implied wife, Betty Richardson, as Thomas’s mother has been provided. No sources for her date of birth, marriage, or date of death. Genealogy articles are not valid proof without documents to back stated information.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Phillip Preston’s only known spouse was Mary Doss. She may have remarried a Doss after Phillip’s death. There is no evidence that Phillip married a Betty Richardson and this is misleading. Therefore, Mary (unknown) Doss is his only acceptable spouse and should be acknowledged for now as the mother of all of the children. Perhaps instead, include something in the write-up such as “Betty Richardson - 1st Spouse or Not?”.

Research by Sonia Meyer years ago along with YDna testing has simply raised more questions. From what I recall, it couldn’t be determined if Thomas was Phillips son or possibly a brother.

Here’s something we do know; Mary Doss does not appear in the Bedford, Virginia tax lists in 1782 or 1784. She is listed at the top of the page on the 1785 tax list as Mary Doss. There are some male Doss’ on the earlier lists. Perhaps her second husband? Or Father?

There is so much that remains unproven about the Bedford Prestons. Where they ‘originated’ from depends on the time period one is considering. Phillip may not be the immigrant, perhaps his father was and he hasn’t been identified. YDna tells us they ‘might’ have come here from Wales. We do know that earlier origins trace back to Scotland.

The YDna project needs many more Y testers.

The mother of Thomas was most likely Mary, not Betty Richardson. John Preston, gg grandson of Thomas, ggg grandson of Phillip lists Mary as wife of Phillip on his US Sons of the Revolutionary War application dated 12-22-1938. I propose changing the mother of Thomas to Doss-246 and possibly consider merging in or copying some of the notes from Unknown-279094.

Preston-3744 and Preston-2485 appear to represent the same person because: Same father, same spouse, same dates

P  >  Preston  >  Thomas Preston
