Biography

Anthony Priestley is born on May 25, 1878 in Fullerton Cove, New South Wales, Australia. Fullerton Cove is across the Hunter River from Newcastle. His parents are George Priestley (1840-1887) and Elizabeth West (1841-1930). Both parents were born in England. Anthony’s surname on the birth registration (in Newcastle) is spelt “Priestly.” And some of his children use the surname “Priestly.” (Not all of the birth registrations of the children have been found but, for the ones that have, the spelling “Priestly” is quite common.)

On March 4, 1903 Anthony marries Alice Mary Giggins (1881-1969) in Newcastle. In the marriage registration, Anthony’s surname is spelt “Priestley.”

Anthony and Alice have either eight or ten children. The following is a tentative list:

The birth locations of all children are not known, however for those where this information is available, they were all born in or near Newcastle (one in Raymond Terrace, one in Hinton, one in Jesmond) suggesting that Anthony and Alice spend most of their lives in or near Newcastle. It is known from one of the birth records (Lina) that in 1911 Anthony was a dairy farmer in Hinton. Hinton, just to the west of Newcastle, is a flood plain at the confluence of the Hunter and Paterson Rivers. The marriage record for Lina in 1932 also shows Anthony as a dairy farmer.

Anthony dies on March 24, 1942 in Kyogle, New South Wales (about 600 kilometres north of Newcastle). He is buried in the Kyogle Cemetery. Alice dies on November 9, 1969 and is buried with Anthony. One of their children (Roy) is buried with them.
