Biography

Margaret Jane "Jennie" Pringle was born 10 October 1864 in Iowa--likely Jefferson Co. She was the daughter of Thomas Pringle and Serepta Huff.

25 August 1870, Jane, aged 5 lived with her siblings and parents, Thomas, a farmer, and Serepta Pringle, listed as "Serreptha," in Clay Twp., Washington Co., Iowa. Children in the hh: Jane, aged 5; Samuel-3; and Viana (Grace), aged 1. [1]

About 1879, she married Truman Cunningham at the age of 14.

18 June 1880 Margaret--age 15 lived in Arian Twp, Cloud Co, KS with her husband, "Trunan," aged 31. The couple had been married within the year and, on the census, the box is checked indicating that Mr. Cunningham, a farmer, had been maimed, crippled, bedridden or otherwise disabled. Her mother, Serepta, was there to help out in this troubled time, accompanied by Jennie's sisters Matilda--age 8 and Grace, age 6 .

By 1883, Margaret Jane "Jennie" (Pringle) Cunningham was in Nebraska.

13 NOV 1883--Jennie Pringle married J. P. Notley in Wymore, Gage Co., Nebraska. John Peter Notley was 39 and Jennie was 19. This marriage ended in essence, in DEC 1884 and, legally, soon after.

Jennie took employment at a hotel in Kansas after they separated. Her husband speaks of his first and second wives in a newspaper article reprinted from the Beatrice (NE) Republican quoted in a Marysville, KS paper. [2]

Jennie and John P. Notley ended their marriage about 1885. [3]

08 AUG 1888--Jennie Notley, daughter of Thomas Pringle and Hannah S., married William P. Parker in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. The groom was 30 and the bride 23.

She married Harry Elmer, perhaps by 1894, but certainly before 1900, however, no marriage record has been found yet. Jennie Elmer was her stage name and she carried it proudly, as Harry Elmer was well-known in the industry at the time. The Huff Family Collection contains a book inscribed with her name and photos of her at that time are labeled Jennie Elmer. Multiple newspapers in Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois and Colorado refer to her as Jennie Elmer, as well.

19 JUN 1900-She was enumerated as Jennie "Elmor" and resided in ED 95 Nodaway Township Clarinda city Ward 1-4, Page County, Iowa. The information she gave was that she was 29 years of age, was widowed, had been married 10 years and was born in OCT 1870 in IA. Her father's POB was Ohio and her mother had been born in Indiana. Occupation: Elocutionist.[4]

1903-1904--Actress in Oklahoma. Sometimes used the name Jennie Elmer Leland.

OCT 1904--Actress in production in Omaha, NE.

Jennie Elmer spent the summer of 1906 in Kansas, living with cousin,, A. G. Huff and his wife, Maude, in Haddam and visiting other Huff family relatives in the area. Her expertise in acting and elocution were put to good use in Summer Theatre and community events. JUL 1906--Mrs. Jennie Elmer, of Loveland, CO--visit with cousin W. A Huff William Huff confirms relationship. [5] [[1]] [[2]]

Newspaper articles place her in Ft. Collins, Colorado with various stock companies as an actress in 1909.

15 March 1910, she sent a postcard (from the same Springfiled, IL address as in the following City Directory listings) to her cousin Arthur Glenn Huff in Pueblo, Colorado. She indicated that they had enjoyed an ongoing correspondence since she had left Colorado and that she was up again and would soon be well.

After her husband's death, she was proprietor of a hotel in Springfield IL. Directory listing: 1911 Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL--Elmer, Jennie 622 ½ E. Adams St. Propr* Elmer Hotel; (European) Modern and newly furnished.

Also in same directory: Price, David A. rms 622 1/2 E. Adams (later, her husband.) As well as: Elmer, Charles II--1308 Rutledge (was he related to Harry Elmer or Jennie, by marriage?) [6] She is listed as widow of Harry Elmer : 1915 Elmer, Jennie (wid. Harry) 514 ½ E. Adams (3d fl) The Elmer Hotel was still listed with Mrs. Cora Kolanda. In later years, the hotel went by “The Sangamon Hotel”

Jennie was an actress and teacher of elocution. 01 OCT 1904 According to a CLIPPER article--Jennie Elmer at Boyd’s Theatre, Omaha, NE in play “A Runaway Tramp.”

Around 1910, Jennie lived/visited in Colorado, near her mother Serepta and cousin A. G. Huff.

6 January 1920 Census shows her living as head of household at 213 South Washington Street with her mother Hannah Serepta Abrams and her "brother" D. A. Price, who was a 48-year-old special agent for the railroad.

3 SEP 1921-Benton, Marshall, Kentucky- Jennie Elmer married David Price, a 50-year-old widower, born in Greenup, KY. He was a son of John and Sarah (Patten) Price, a railroad man and a resident of Hamilton (County?) Ohio. The bride had been born in Keokuk County, Iowa, a daughter of "Hanna" Huff and Thomas Pringle. She was a resident of Wautago(sp?) Oklahoma. [7] His mother's maiden name may have been Patton and her nickname Sadie?

In April 1930 Census in Sterling, Logan, Colorado, Jennie Price was listed as widowed, living in the household of Robert Devoe, proprietor of the (indecipherable) Hotel and acting as housekeeping manager. Owning a hotel in Illinois previously gave her good experience, no doubt, for this job. Special note: Census info cites age at 1st marriage was 14. [8]
