Biography

This profile is part of the Pringle Name Study.

George Pringle was born in 1791 in Morpeth, Northumberland.

George married firstly Susan Winter (born on April 18, 1795 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland; daughter of Peter Winter and Elizabeth (Lindsay) Winter) on 2 Feb 1814 in Canongate, Edinburghshire, Scotland. [1] Susan Winter died in 1835

Their children were born in Edinburgh, Edinburghshire, Scotland:

George married Ann Robertson after 1835. Together they had at least 2 known children, John Robertson Pringle, went on to have large family, while Robert sadly died at aged 15.

George appears to be a troubled chap and was often jailed for petty offences, usually alcohol related, e.g. stealing/pawning the watches he was supposed to be repairing, for money to buy alcohol, then breach of the peace sort of stuff when inebriated. His son George appears to have "followed in his footsteps". It can't have been an easy life for their families.

In 1851 George, age 60, was the head of household in Hardwell Close, Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian. He was a Clock Maker.[6]

Isabella Pringle is this 1851 household is his daughter by first wife Susan Winter

George died in 1853, aged about 61. In a poorhouse in Edinburgh apparently as the result of an alcohol/drink related affliction.

Research Notes

George Snr died in a Poorhouse alone because of his addiction, he and his son George were both watch/clock maker repairers, both of them succumbed to the drink, and it was their downfall. George Jnr actually landed up being sentenced to 7 years deportation in 1851, he did actually ship out in April 1853.. he died 4 months after being shipped, from the DT's (delerious tremens).

Folks say the 7 year sentence, for George Jnr, for (allegedly) stealing/pawning (for drink money) a watch he was entrusted to repair was too much but I very much presume that this father and son had inflicted much more discomfort on their families and possible crimes that went unreported
