Biography

Joseph Prudden (son of John Prudden and Grace Prudden) was born Abt. 1692 in Milford, New Haven, CT, and died September 25, 1776 in Morristown, NJ. He married Joanna Lyon on 1716, daughter of Benjamin Lyon and Bethia Condit(Lindsley).
Will of Joseph Prudden: May 17, 1769, Prudden, Joseph, of Morristown, Morris Co., yeoman; debts to be paid by my sons, Joseph and Isaac. Son, Peter, a tract of land, bounded by Thomas Cleverly and Nathan Reeve; also a tract at the corner of Joseph Prudden, Jr., which he bought of Peter Kemble, and contains 56 29/100 acres. Son Peter, the land in Yorkshire, Great Britain. Daughter Kezia, to be supported by my sons. To Peter, Joseph and Isaac I give a town right at Newark, lying by the harbor. Son Joseph, land at the corner of Peter Prudden, of 163 acres. Son Moses, land bounded by Robert Gobil, of 157 acres. Son Isaac, 163 acres. Sons Adoniram and Benjamin, L40 each. Daughter Rachel, L40. Granddaughter, Joanna Ayers, L25. To Enos Coe, L15. Granddaughter, Joanna Miller, relict of my daughter Sarah, L10, and to her and her other remaining 5 children, L30 each. Daughter Joanna Lindsley, L20. Grandson Boyse Prudden, L16, to John L16, to Amos L8. Executors-sons, Peter, and Joseph. Witnesses: Thomas Cleverly, Timothy Johnes, Robert McCelvy. Joseph Prudden was a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, NJ., in 1744, and became an elder in 1748. Before the American Revolution, Negro slavery existed in New Jersey. Joseph Prudden had his slaves baptised. The Reverend Timothy Johns of the Morristown church, in his records of baptisms, gives the following: "1742 March 27, Joseph Prudden's negro's child Violet, 1747, Jan. 15, Joseph Prudden and wife stood for negro's child Titus; 1751, June 21, Deacon Joseph Prudden and wife servants of ch. Notes for Joseph Prudden: President George W. Bush and his mother First Lady Barbara Bush are descendants. Also a distant relation of poet/ essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson and General William Tecumseh Sherman.
