Biography

John was born about 1730 in Virginia, probably Goochland County (which was formed in 1728 from Henrico County. Goochland was a very large county at that time).
(There was a John Pruitt who was b 1736 in Prince George's Co, MD, son of Samuel Waters and Elizabeth Hawker. This John moved to Pittsylvania Co, VA about 1761 and seems to be a different person).[1]
There were several John Pruitts in Virginia, as "The Prewitt/Pruitt Records of Virginia" show.[2]

His father's name is uncertain. There was a Henry Pruitt in Henrico county in 1681/85, who was married to a sister of John Fields. Some think John Pruett’s middle name was Fields, leading us to speculate that he was the son or grandson of this Henry Pruitt of Henrico Co, VA.[3] He named a son Meredith Field, so there must be a connection somewhere.

John married Alice Addison about 1751, probably Goochland Co, VA. A record of John's marriage has not been found, but the births of his children (beginning with Obadiah Aug 9, 1758) were recorded in The Douglas Register, Goochland County, VA. from at least 1758 to 1770. [4] It's likely they married before 1756 when the Register was started.

1758, Aug. 9, Obadiah Addison Pruitt born in St. James Parish to John Pruitt and Alice Addison (p54). He was baptized on April 1, 1759 (p279)[4]
(but according to Obadiah’s pension application in 1834 he said, “I was born in Goochland County, Va. in the year 1755 on the 6th day of July as I always heard and believe.")

There was a John Prewit listed on the roll for military service, July 15, 1777, Virginia. On the same page was Caleb Addison (perhaps Alice's brother.)[11]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

William Webb and Mourning Pruitt mentioned in this profile have WikiTree profiles of their own: Webb-16254 and Pruitt-1892

I would be interested to work together to find a connection.
