Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Page Puckett was a Virginia colonist.

Page Puckett, the father of Harris Puckett, is the focus of this profile.

Page Puckett, who lived in Greenville Co, SC, and then in Hall Co, GA, was born 1751-1760.[1][2] He passed away after 1833, in GA, when he conveyed 100 acres in Hall County, GA.[3] His land adjoined Harris Puckett at the time.

Page's parents are believed to be Isom Puckett I (1723-aft.1775) and his wife Martha. Page was likely born in Chesterfield Co, VA, where his parents were living at the time. He was not born in Grayson Co, VA. It was not created until 1792. See Logistical Considerations.

Page was married to Rebecca. They likely married in Mecklenburg Co, VA, in about 1769-1774. On 12 Nov 1774, Isham Puckett, father of Page Puckett, had a deed for the land he was living on in Mecklenburg Co, VA. In said deed, his land adjoined John Harris. On 9 Oct 1775, a deed for Isham Puckett and his wife Martha indicates they lived next to Page Puckett and Harris, perhaps the same John Harris. It's possible, but not proven, that Rebecca's maiden name was Harris. Their son Harris Puckett's name might be a clue. More research is needed to determine if there is a connection between the Puckett and Harris families.

Page and Rebecca Puckett were members of Meherrin Baptist Church in Virginia, which served Lunenburg, Charlotte and Mecklenburg counties.[4]

Deeds of Mecklenburg Co, VA involving Isham Puckett:

Mecklenburg Co, VA, on 12 Nov 1774, Isham Puckett of Mecklenburg to Allen Love, land in Mecklenburg where said Puckett now lives, adjoining John Bugg, John Harris, David Taylor & Lewis Parham, 235 acres, debt, 12 Nov 1774.[5] [This apparently was to settle a debt. The debt must have been satisfied another way, because Isham sold the land later.]

Mecklenburg Co, VA, on 9 Oct 1775, Isham Puckett of Mecklenburg Co to Stephen Strange of Brunwick Co, land in Mecklenburg bounded by John Bugg, Lewis Parham, Clay, chopt [sic, ‘chopped’] line [probably meaning a line of chopped trees], 100 acres. Isham Puckett (X his mark), no witnesses. Mecklenburg Court 9 Oct 1775, acknowledged by Isham Puckett & Martha his wife.[5]

Mecklenburg Co, VA, on 9 Oct 1775, Isham Puckett of Mecklenburg Co to John Ingram Jr of Brunswick, land in Mecklenburg bounded by Clay, Harris, Page Puckett, a chopt line, 135 acres. Isham Puckett (X his mark), no witnesses. Mecklenburg Court 9 Oct 1775, acknowledged by Isham Puckett & Martha his wife.[5]

Children

The following list of children is based on Page Puckett's Census reports. The 1790 and 1800 Census reports are consistent. Both reports have eight people. The ages, gender, and headcount aligns on both Census reports.

  • Harris Puckett Sr. (abt.1775-abt.1845)
  • Presumed daughter #1 — born 1775-1784
  • Presumed daughter #2 — born 1775-1784
  • Presumed daughter #3 — born 1785-1790
  • Presumed daughter #4 — born 1790-1795
  • Presumed daughter #5 — born 1790-1795
  • Keep in mind, we cannot be sure how the people enumerated in the household are related.

Assuming Page was only married once, and based on the age of his wife on Census records, any children of Page Puckett and his wife Rebecca were likely born 1768-1795. By 1795, Rebecca was approximately 45 years old. We know Rebecca was still living in 1794 when she and Page signed a deed. Therefore, the children on the 1790 and 1800 Census reports likely belong to both Page and Rebecca.

Based on Census reports (1790-1820) in South Carolina, Harris Puckett might be the only son of Page. Only one son is enumerated on the Census reports found for Page. It's possible that Page had older son(s) of age, and on their own by 1790. In other words, if those sons existed, they were born about 1768-1772. Harris was born about 1775.

DNA information

Conflation of men named Page Puckett

Primary records only support two men named Page Puckett when focusing on the 1700s and early 1800s. Both men have ties to Chesterfield Co, VA. Neither man has been documented in Grayson Co, VA, or Indiana.

  1. Page Puckett, born after 1751 and died 1833-1839 in Hall Co, GA.
    • He was documented in VA, NC, SC, and then GA. He is the subject of this profile.
    • Census records confirm this Page was born after 1751. Records outlined in this profile shows a connection between Harris Puckett and Page Puckett. Furthermore, Harris was named in his father-in-law's probate records in Greenville Co, SC. This was in 1840 after Harris was living in Hall Co, GA.
  2. Page Puckett, born before 1736, son of John Puckett, documented in Chesterfield Co, VA
    • 1752: Tax Record for Page Puckett in Chesterfield Co, VA, confirms he was born before 1736 if he was at least 16 years old when he first paid taxes. See Tax List. Page (b: bef 1736) was listed on the same page as Ephraim Puckett, Isham Puckett and a group of Pucketts, including Womack Puckett, Bows Puckett, and Womack Puckett Junr. It's believed Page (b: before 1736) was either the son of John Puckett (LWT) or a son of Womack Puckett (based on age). Records don't support a third Page in the area. Hence, Page (son of John) appears to be the best candidate for the 1752 Tax Record.
    • 1760: Chesterfield County, Virginia: Capt. Wilkinson's company. Court Martial Held 22 Oct 1760. Pg 343. "absent Oct. 27; William Pucket... Page Pucket, no bayonet;"
    • 1765: Chesterfield County, Virginia: On 9 Jul 1765 a Page Puckett was named in the LWT of John Puckett.
    • 1769: Chesterfield County, Virginia: "P 264. March Court 1769. The LWT of John Pucket dec'd was proven by the oath of Page Pucket and Sarah Westbrook and ordered recorded."
    • 1770: Chesterfield County, Virginia: "Page 480. December 1770. Henry Bass against Page Pucket dismissed. Agreed by parties."

The following lack primary sources. Records are needed to prove their existence. Can you help?

  1. Rumored man named Page Puckett allegedly in Grayson Co, VA
    • No one named Page Puckett has been documented in Grayson Co, VA, during this Page's lifetime. Often trees use death information belonging to Joseph Puckett (abt.1785-1835). Generally, trees conflate Pucketts by using details borrowed from a variety of Pucketts.
    • Grayson County, Virginia, was not created until 7 Nov 1792, from Wythe County. See comments by Spratlin-29 on Isom Puckett I (1723-aft.1760).
    • See details about Grayson County in the Research Notes on (click here).
    • Lunenburg County was created from Brunswick County in 1746.[19]
  2. Rumored man named Page Puckett allegedly in Randolph Co, IN
    • Furthermore, there is a rumor Page Puckett married in Indiana, before it was a state. This is highly unlikely. Note that the territory of Indiana existed from 1800-1816, when the southern portion was admitted as a state.
    • No documentation has been found to support that this, or any other, Page Puckett lived or died in Indiana.[20]

Rumors and theories

Several family tree books mention Page Puckett. These books provide very little, or confusing, information regarding Page. For consideration, here is a breakdown.

  1. Welcome Garrett and his descendants [21]
    • It only mentions Page Puckett once.
    • The Puckett information in the book is passed down via oral history.
    • No primary sources provided for Page Puckett.
    • "The sons of Martha and Isom Puckett were, i. Isom Jr., ii Thomas, iii, Page, iv, Solomon, v. Warnuck, vi. John, vii. Daniel." (Punctuation errors presented as they appear in the book.)
      • Thus far, I'm unable to find records to support Solomon, Warnock, John, and Daniel as sons of Isom and Martha Puckett.Raffety-49 04:02, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
    • See Chapter II, p 18, section regarding Mary Garrett. The book asserts that Mary (b. 1787 in Surry Co, NC — d. 1846 Randolph Co, IN) married Joseph Puckett (b. 1785 in Grayson Co, VA — d. 7 Nov 1835 in Randolph Co, IN). Joseph was reportedly the son of Thomas Puckett and Mary Taylor-Puckett.
      • Of interest, there is a rumor that a Page Puckett died on 7 Nov 1836 in Randolph Co, IN. This information is borrowed from Joseph Puckett (abt.1785-1835). Often, trees use Joseph's death information for different men, about 4-6 different Pucketts.
  2. Thomas Puckett of Travis County, Republic of Texas : (his ancestors and descendants) [22]
    • It only mentions Page Puckett once.
    • It uses the Welcome Garrett Genealogy book as its source.
    • No primary sources provided for Page Puckett.
    • "Thus, the Welcome Garrett Genealogy sets forth that Isom (Isham) Puckett (born 1723, son of Womack and Mabel Puckett, Bristol Parish Register) and Isom's wife Martha, had seven sons, namely: Isom (Jr.), Thomas, Page, Solomon, Womack, John and Daniel."
  3. The roots and some of the branches of the Puckett family tree [23]
    • This book is confusing regarding Page Puckett.
    • Page# 3 - Under the title The Descendants of John Puckett (B1), the Son of John and Anne, The Immigrants, and Elizabeth Allen, His Wife
      • "D1 John Puckett probably born about 1716. Will dated July 9, 1765. Mentions wife, but does not name her."
        • "Issue: E1 Agnes Puckett, E2 Eady Puckett, E4 Page Puckett"
      • "John Puckett (D1) in his will refers to Grandson Joel, son of Page and granddaughter, Fanny. Page Puckett a Revolutionary soldier."
        • "F1 Page Puckett. In Union Co., S.C. 1788-91. Page and Rebecca Puckett buy land in Spartanburg Co., S. C. in 1794. A Page Puckett dies Nov. 7, 1836, Randolph Co., Ind. (Irene D. Gallaway Ms.)"
        • "F2 Joel Puckett. (Grandfather's will)."
    • Page# 3 - Comments and Observations
      • The above implies there were two Page Pucketts based on identifiers E4 and F1.
        • Who was the father of Page Puckett F1?
      • The assertion that Page Puckett F1 died in Randolph Co, IN, is not proven. No primary sources can be found. The death information is conflated with death information of Joseph Puckett (abt.1785-1835). Additionally, speculation might be derived from a Quaker Cemetery record that simply states, "P. Puckett, no other information."[20]
