Biography

Susannah (Punchard) Stiff was born in Suffolk, England.

Susannah Punchard was born about 1822 in Rattlesden, Suffolk, England to Jeremiah Punchard and Sarah (Ranson) Punchard. She was christened in Rattlesden on 11 Apr 1824.^[1]

In 1841 Susan Punchard (age 19-23) lived at Church Yard in Rattlesden with her father Jeremiah (40-44), mother Sarah (40-44), and twelve siblings: John (20-24), Jeremiah (17-21), William (15-19), Mary Ann (11), Eliza (10), Charles (9), Ellen (7), Emma (6), Caroline (5), Ann (3), Henry (2), and George (0).^[2]

Susan had one daughter before she was married: Harriet Punchard (c1842-).

Susan Punchard married Edmund Stiff in 1846.^[3] Edmund already had children from his first marriage.

Susan and Edmund had ten children: Daniel Stiff (1847-), Emma Stiff (1849-), John Stiff (1851-), Clara Stiff (1852-), Alfred Stiff (1853-), Jeremiah Stiff (1855-), Eliza Stiff (1857-), Nelson Stiff (1859-), Margaret Ellen Stiff (1861-), and Laura Jane Stiff (1864-)

In 1851 Susan Stiff (age 30) lived in Drinkstone, Suffolk with her husband Edmund (45, Ag Lab), two stepchildren: Mary (14) and Henry (12), two children with Edmund: Daniel (3) and Emma (2), and her own older daughter Harriett Punchard (9).^[4]

In 1861 Susannah Stiff (age 41) lived at Green in Drinkstone with her husband Edmund (60, Agricultural Labourer) and nine children: Daniel (13, Agricultural Labourer), Emma (12), John (9), Alfred (7), Jeremiah (5), Eliza (4), Nelson (2), Ellen (0), and Harriett Punchard (19, Work In The Fields).^[5]

In 1871 Susan Stiff (age 50) lived in Drinkstone with her husband Edmund (70, Agricultural Labourer), six children: John (19, Agricultural Labourer), Alfred (17, Agricultural Labourer), Eliza (14, Scholar), Nelson (12, Agricultural Labourer), Margaret E (10, Scholar), and Laura J (6, Scholar), as well as granddaughter Bartha M Stiff (2).^[6]
