Biography

Burial: Upper Ridge Cemetery, Nain, Frederick County, Virginia, USA

The Tavenner Family

The first appearance of this name in Frederick County was shortly after 1833. This was Stacey J. Tavenner, who had married Pleasant P. Purcell in Loudoun County, and removed to Ohio, where he remained only a few years. There his son Jonah was born. He returned to Virginia in 1840, and lived for several years on Applepie Ridge; then removed to Bellville near the head of Opecquon, where he reared a large family, viz: Newton who joined the 1849 goldhunters, and started to California, but died before reaching the "gold diggings." The next child was Mary E. who became the wife of Jonah J. Lupton and died at Cloverdale; left two children, who are mentioned in the Lupton Sketch.

The Purcell Family

Adaline J daughter of James Cather married John Purcell of Frederick County upon his return from the gold fields of California he being one of the old Forty Niners who made the overland trip with wagons and pack mules. Mr Purcell's family is not one of the old settlers but a brief sketch at this point may properly appear in connection with the Cather family. This family came from Loudoun County, Virginia. Purcell brought with him his young children: Pleasant, Mary, Joseph, Mordecai, Thomas, Lott, Lydia Ann, Rosanna, Priscilla, John, Rebecca, and Elias. Possibly several of the younger children were born in Frederick Their mother was Mary Jane daughter of Joseph Janney of Loudoun County. The Purcell ancestors were Irish. [...] Being a prosperous man he indulged his generosity to such an extent that it became known as the Wanderers Home. The writer had many persons to tell him of the kind acts of John Purcell and his estimable wife.
