Biography

Sarah (Purrier) Mapes immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Sarah was born in Olney, Buckinghamshire, England, christened in 1630. She emigrated from London to Boston, Massachusetts aboard the Hopewell on April 3, 1635 at the age of seven, "Sarah Purryer 5 child of Wm. Purryer".[1]

She married Thomas Mapes in 1650 in New York or 6 June 1653 in Southold, Suffolk, New York[2] and had eight children.

"If Sarah Purrier was born about 1630, she might have married Thomas Mapes as early as 1646, but more likely 1648 or later." (p. 130)[3]

Sarah Purrier Mapes is mentioned in her father's will of 13 December 1671, where he did "give and bequeath unto Sarah Mapes and Martha Osman my two youngest daughters, twenty pounds each of them'"[3]

Death and Legacy

Sarah Mapes died sometime between 23 August 1686 when she was mentioned in her husband's will [4] and the 1698 Southold Census, when she does not appear along with other members of the Mapes family.[5] One possible record of her death is found in the "Salmon Records" a private register of marriages and deaths in Southhold, there is an entry transcribed as "[13] Apr. 1697.....oodee Mapes, widow, buried."[6] It has been suggested that this could be a mistranscription for "Sadee Mapes, widow."[7]

Although there's no stone, Sarah Purrier Mapes is probably buried in the Old Burying Ground of First Presbyterian Church, Southold, New York.[8]

Research Notes

Research needs: It might be possible to tighten the window for the date of death if there are any probate proceedings or land sales by Sarah after her husband's death.

I've done a little research. I think the most reliable information for her death is "before 1698." From Tentative correction of the Mapes family line (1941) by Lester Dunbar Mapes, p 6 "Sarah Mapes, wife of Thomas1 Mapes died before the census of 1698 at Southold as her name does not appear therein. She may have died in Apr. 1697 as Sadee Mapes, widow (REF. 12)" archive.org

I thought that a record of the death os Sadee Mapes, widow seemed like a good match, but when I looked up the Reference 12 (Vol 47, NYGBR, "Salmon Records), I see why he was tentative. The transcription of the records is acually ".....oodee Mapes, widw, buried," so it sounds like "Sadee" was a guess on his part based on the transcription, and not actually seeing the records.

Since LD Mapes when with before 1698, my inclination is to stick with that, and then add the other possibility in the bio.

Any objections?
