Biography

Note: Many researchers cite a 2nd marriage of William Galloway to Mary Green on 25 Nov 1830 Oglethorpe Co, GA as evidence of Polly Ragan Galloway's death before 1830. However, that 1830 marriage record probably belongs to a different (unrelated) William Galloway, son of a Thomas Galloway, both of whom moved to Newton Co, GA by 1840.

That Thomas Galloway was b/ ca 1785 VA, d/ May 1850, Chambers Co, AL and lived in Oglethorpe Co, GA from his 1807 marriage to Nancy Matthews through the 1830 census. This Thomas Galloway always lived further removed from all the other Oglethorpe Co, GA Galloways (Matthew and his children) indicating he probably was not a relative.

This Thomas Galloway had a probable sister, Margaret S. ("Peggy") Galloway (b/ 1788 VA, d/ 1879 Cherokee Co, GA) who married John Holland in 1808 Oglethorpe Co, GA.

I have traced this Thomas Galloway extensively in trying to connect him to our Matthew and William Galloway's line and Galloway yDNA conclusively rules this Thomas out as being related to our Galloways.

This proves that there were other, unrelated Galloways in Oglethorpe Co, GA and indicates the high probability that this William Galloway marriage to Mary Green is likely for another man than our William (who married Polly Ragan).

The 1840 Elbert Co, GA census indicates that our William Galloway (still) had a living wife and a number of additional children since the 1830 census and this would be Polly Ragan. (I have tentatively identified one of these probable children born between 1830 and 1840).

Further indication of this being Polly Ragan in the 1840 census is that in 1860, she is living with her daughter, Sina Galloway Wilson, in DeKalb Co, AL. If this Polly was Mary Green and a 2nd wife to our William and had children of her own (those born 1830-1840), she would probably be living with her own blood relations than a stepdaughter.
