Biography

According to her great granddaughter, Rosemarie Estes, shortly after the end of the Civil War Jeremiah P. McGill showed up at the Ranson family farm. Wyatt Ranson offered Jeremiah the pick of his daughters for a wife, and he chose Elizabeth. She was unhappy being chosen and thought him too old for her. In the 1925 census in Iowa, Elizabeth is listed as a widow and head of household, and she has her two sisters, now in their seventies and eighties living with her, both single.

Obit: "Mary Elizabeth Ranson, daughter of Wyatt and Nancy Ranson, was born at Batavia, O., July 16, 1845. She was united in marriage with Jeremiah P. McGill Jan. 1, 1867. Four children were born to their union--Gilbert B. of Seattle, Wash., Luella, deceased, Mrs. Carrie Woods of Glenwood, and Wilber, deceased. Mrs. McGill came with her husband to the vicinity of Emerson in 1870, later moving to Emerson. Mr. McGill preceded her in death in 1915. Eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren besides the two children survive. Mrs. McGill united with the Methodist Episcopal church of her childhood community. For many years she was a devoted member of the Methodist church in Emerson. Her many friends always found in her the very finest qualities of Christian womanhood. To mourn her departure would be evidence of desire to deny her the final rewards of long years of faithful living, the sweet release from her earthly house to take up her abode in her house not made with hands eternal in the heavens."
