Biography

Thomas Raybould was born c.1825 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire.

Ann Gadd married Thomas Raybould on 20 July 1845 at Clent, Worcestershire. Their marriage certificate recorded Thomas was a bachelor of full age and a shoemaker. His father was named as James Raybould, also a shoemaker. Ann was a spinster of full age and a nailer. Her father was named as Thomas Gadd, a nailer. At the time of their marriage they were both simply recorded as residing at Rowley Regis. Witnesses were John Troman and Jane Gadd, Ann's sister and her future husband. [1]

This couple had twelve known children named James Raybould born 1845, Betsy/Betsey Raybould born 1846, Rebecca Raybould born 1848, Joseph Raybould born 1850, Samuel Raybould born 1852, Alice Raybould born 1853, Henry Raybould born 1856, Absalom born 1858, David Raybould born 1859, Albert Thomas Raybould born 1861, Crispin Carls Franz Raybould born 1863 and Phebe Ann Raybould born 1868.

Several of their children were baptised at St. Giles' Church, Rowley Regis.
Daughter Betsy was baptised on 12 September 1847. The family was living at Peartree St and Thomas was a shoemaker.
Joseph, Rebecca, Samuel, Alice, Henry and David were all baptised together on 22 July 1860. The family was then living at Old Hill and Thomas was a shoemaker.
Son Albert Thomas was baptised on 15 September 1861 and son Crispen Carle [sic] Franz Raybould on 27 December 1863. The family was still at Old Hill and Thomas was a shoemaker. [2]

In the 1851 census Thomas and Ann and family were living at Peartree St, Reddhal Hill in the parish of Rowley Regis. Thomas, aged 25, was a journeyman shoemaker. Ann was also aged 25 and children Betsey [as named], Rebecca and Joseph were aged 3 years, 2 years and 6 months respectively. [3]
Son James has not been located in this census.

Son Absalom Raybould died in 1858 aged under 12 months. [4]
He was buried on 28 November 1858 at St Giles’ Churchyard. The burial register recorded Absalom was residing at Old Hill at his death. He died aged 10 months of inflammation of the lungs. [5]

In 1861 the family was living at Halesowen Rd, Reddal Hill, Rowley Regis. Thomas, aged 36, was a shoemaker. Ann, too, was aged 36. James was aged 15, Betsey aged 13, Rebecca aged 12, Joseph, aged 11, Samuel, aged 9, Alice, aged 7, Henry, aged 4, and David, aged 1. [6]

Son Albert Raybould, as named, died in 1864 aged 3 years. [7]
He was buried on 10 August 1864 at St. Luke's Churchyard, Cradley Heath. The burial register recorded Albert was residing at Old Hill at his death and was aged 3 years. [8]

Daughter Rebecca Raybould died in 1865 aged 16 years. [9]
She was buried on 29 October 1865 at St. Luke's Churchyard, Cradley Heath. The burial register recorded Rebecca was residing at Old Hill at her death and was aged 17 [sic] years. [10]

And son Joseph Raybould died in 1867 aged 16 years. [11]
He was buried on 15 August 1867 at St. Luke’s Churchyard, Cradley Heath. The burial register recorded Joseph Raybold [sic] was residing at Old Hill at his death and was aged 17 [sic] years. [12]

In the 1871 census the family was still living in Halesowen Road. Thomas, aged 46, was then recorded as a boot and shoe maker. Ann was aged 46. Sons Samuel, aged 19, and Henry, aged 15, were both working as boot and shoe makers as well, probably with their father. Alice was aged 17. Younger children David, aged 11, and Crispin, aged 7, were both attending school. Phoebe [sic] was aged 3. [13]

From an entry in the 1872 Kelly’s Directory of Staffordshire -
Raybould Thomas, Old Hill, Boot Maker. [14]

When her father Thomas died in 1875, Ann, like her siblings, seemed to have benefited well from their father’s quite substantial estate of properties.
From the will dated 1871 - I give and devise my three house situate in Lomey Town in the parish of Rowley Regis aforesaid now in the occupation of John Rock, Edwin A. Henbury and John Banner with the chain shop land outbuildings conveniences and appurtenances unto my trustees during the natural life of my said daughter Ann Raybould upon trust to pay to her or permit her to receive during her natural life the rents profits and annual income thereof for her sole use free from the control debts or engagements of her present or any future husband as a separate inalienable provision for herself without power for her to anticipate or charge the accruing payments and her receipt alone to be a sufficient discharge for the same. And after her death unto and to the use of her husband the said Thomas Raybould (if then living) and his assigns for his natural life or until he shall marry again. And after the death of the said Ann Raybould and the death or remarriage of the said Thomas Raybould then unto my said trustees and their heirs upon trust to sell the same premises by public action if they can but if not then in such manner in all respects as they shall think fit and to divide the net sale monies arising therefrom after paying expenses and also any rents and profits arising between this trust coming into operation and the carrying into effect thereof unto the child or if more than one unto and equally as tenants in common between or amongst the children of the said Ann Raybould who being sons or a son shall attain the age of twenty one years or being daughters or a daughter shall attain that age or marry with the usual statutory powers of maintenance and advancement during minority. [15]

Ann Raybould died in 1877 aged 52 years. [16]

In the 1881 census Thomas was living at 9 Wellington Street, Old Hill, Rowley Regis. Aged 56, he was still a shoe maker. Samuel, aged 29, was a drain pipe labourer. David, aged 20, was an iron moulder and Crispin, aged 17, was an apprentice to a wheelwright. Daughter Phoebe, aged 12, was still at school. [17]

Thomas Raybould died in 1883 aged 59 years. [18]

The Will of Thomas Raybould formerly of Old Hill but late of Black Heath both in the Parish of Rowley Regis in the County of Stafford Shoe maker who died 23 November 1883 at Black Heath was proved at Lichfield on 13 December 1883 by Alfred Willetts of Lawrence Lane Old Hill Gun Barrel Grinder one of the Executors, power reserved of making the like grant to David Raybould (in the Will written Raybold) the Son the other Executor. Effects £14. [19]

His will read as follows -
This is the last will and Testament of me Thomas Raybold [sic] Shoemaker of Old Hill in the parish of Rowley Regis in the County of Stafford made this tenth day of February One thousand eight hundred and eighty one Whereof I appoint my Son in Law Alfred Willetts and David Raybold my son to be the Executors and Trustees I direct them to pay my just debts (if any) and funeral and Testamentary expenses out of my personal estate I give and devise my one house no 9 Wellington Street Old Hill in the parish of Rowley Regis aforesaid with the outbuildings land and appurtenances my [sic] Eight children Jams [sic] Raybold Betsey Heades the Wife of George Heades Samuel Raybold Alice Willetts the Wife of Alfred Willetts Henery [sic] Raybold David Raybold Crispin Raybold Phebe Ann Raybold if either one or more of my surviving children should die leaving no children their share or shares shall be equally divided among my surviving children then living I hereby request as soon after my death as the Executors and Trustees shall think fit to sell by Private or Public Auction the same aforesaid property also all my household furniture and Shop Tools I give my Executors power to receive my club money amount Ten pounds payable at my death after my debts and funerall [sic] expence [sic] are paid for each of my aforesaid Children to take their equal share If I should die before my Daughter Phebe Ann is twenty one or gets married that the Executors invest her share in the Post Office Savings Bank and that she receives it with interest at the aforesaid time
I hereunto sign my hand this 10th day of February One thousand eight hundred and eighty one Thomas Raybould
Signed by the said Testator Thomas Raybould as his last Will and Testament in the presence of us present at the same time who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses: Charles Davis and Henry L Davis [20]
