Biography

Margaret was born about 1690 in Hanover, Virginia. She is listed in the marriage records with Edward Buss in 1713 in Virginia because they were convicted of cohabitation and fornicating with each other while not married. They were unable to marry because she had a "bastard mulotto child" which was Moses as he was half Native American Indian. She passed away about 1734. [1]

extra sources and questions insert: https://bettysgenealogyblog.blogspot.com/2016/09/contemplating-ancestry-dna-of-moses.html has info on taxes and statements pertaining to Moses. Subject to interpretation the info regarding DNA, I'm able to connect to the Sizemore family, but it could be for a number of reasons, various cousins we may all likely share? But, on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melungeon it mentions to the Riddle and Sizemore DNA. I'm not seeing additional Indigenous on my ancestry via my maternal line vs. my paternal which is confirmed Cherokee. (Yes I am a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and card holder.) However, I'm not seeing African ancestry on Ancestry either and even a small portion it would seem would show up if Spain and the Andes is on it. Leave the DNA for debate, all my family and other cousins have said Native along my maternal line but I'm not finding proof other than "Indian" and "Powhattan" being written in notes. No idea so the Riddle's riddle continues. In addition to the Wikipedia resource, read it with a grain of salt. Marriage was discouraged/seems actually forbidden, and certainly not something granted at this couple's request. I'd love to find more info on Edward Buss other than images I uploaded and regarding Margaret's "servitude" to Caleb Butler and why. Interesting a "white woman" was indentured. Also note, Native Americans were also forced into slavery/servitude. So many questions and hopefully someone can clear some of it up. There is a book by Jack Groin, Melungeons ... but out of print, anyone have a copy and able to scan or transcribe? -Justine Baker

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:

I’m a direct descendant of William Thomas Riddle, supposedly Moses’s son. I have no trace of Native American, but do have Northern Europe and the Middle East. I have wondered about the possible Buss/Bass connection. Since the Riddles were not a part of the core Melungeon group, like the Sizemores, I’ve wondered if we were descendants of the early Muslim slaves.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-520635 & https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Redley-1 Margaret , possible same Margaret and Edward. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Buss-278 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bass-445 Sources used on their pages are the same. I don't see a Moses listed as a child for the couple. Her last name has been referred to as Lovewell and Rainwater. What is interesting is visit Edward's page and the notes and sources being quite similar to what I uploaded here for this couple. An anyone that descends from this line repeatedly heard stories of "Native" plus the tax saying "Indian" on one and "Powhattan" being referenced then look up the history of the Nasemond tribe. Edward Buss possibly Edward Bass? No mention of a "moses". But that doesn't mean a definite no. There are many similarities between this couple and that one. What I'd like to see is Margaret's indentured service info to Caleb Butler and more on Edward of the early 1700s regarding the court records posted from Westmoreland County Virginia. Perhaps this "Riddle" riddle is closer to being solved? https://nativeamericanroots.wordpress.com/2015/05/22/the-nansemond-indian-bass-family-of-granville/comment-page-1/
