Biography

Emma Jane Furman (née Reed) was born on 23 October 1854 in Macedon, Wayne, New York, the oldest of nine children of Robert Tedman Reed and Mary Ann Hoag. She was raised on a farm in West Walworth.

She married Edward Augusta Furman on 5 January 1875 in Macedon. They moved to Afton, Cherokee, Iowa shortly thereafter, before moving to Cherokee Township. In Iowa, they had five children together: Iva Reed, Elmer Ray, Ethel May, Verna Dell, and Hazel Eva.

The family next moved to Plankinton, Aurora, South Dakota in 1901. Emma and Edward lived in the area until 1930, when they moved into the home of their daughter Verna and family in Huron, Beadle, South Dakota. They lived here for the rest of their lives.

Emma passed away on 4 February 1937 in Huron and was buried in Afton Cemetery in Afton Township.
