She is the daughter of Reverend George Reid and Isobel Traill. When Jean Reid was born in 1730 in Kirkwall and St Ola, Orkney, Scotland, her father, George, was 23, and her mother, Isobell, was 24. She had five sons with John Brodie between 1759 and 1775. She had two brothers and eight sisters.
