Lene Gesine Ove Rejnertsdatter was born on September 10, 1848, to parents Marte Johanna Larsdatter and Ove Rejnert Sakariasen and baptized on September 27, 1848, in Lista Parish, Vest-Agder, Norway. She was their third daughter and fourth child. A younger sister born in 1852, Remine Mathilde, died shortly after her fourth birthday, although Lene’s remaining siblings survived to adulthood.
The 1865 Norway Census, completed by December 31 of that year, indicated that 17-year-old Lene Gesine lived at that time with her family in Vanse, Vest-Agder, Norway. Secondary records date her marriage to Fordel Hogenson as April 23, 1875; however, I have not yet found any primary documents indicating where the couple married or when, how, or why Lene emigrated to North America. The Ephraim Historical Society has an online first-person story reported from Fordel Hogenson’s perspective that suggests he and Lene met in Wisconsin (see https://ephraim.org/cemetery-walk-2016/).
Lene and Fordel had 7 children together over the next 12 years, 4 sons and 3 daughters. Their last child, a daughter named Lene Gesine in honor of her mother, was born on April 12, 1887, and, according to the death certificate, 37-year-old Lene contracted typhoid fever (a bacterial infection) during childbirth. Seriously ill, she passed away two weeks later, on April 25, 1877. Her tiny namesake lived only 4 months and died on August 30, 1877. Lene Hogenson is buried in the Ephraim Moravian Cemetery in Wisconsin.
