Jacob's father Joseph died in 1815 followed by his mother Susannah the next year, leaving him an orphan at age 19 (or so). He and his older brother Joseph (Jr) evidently took joint resposibility for their two or three youngest siblings. "Jacob was an ambious uneducated lad ... [In 1821] he took a flat-boat proably loaded with whiskey and farm produce down [river] to New Orleans. ... [In] 1827 he purchased two copper stills fir $60.06 ... The settlement of his father's estate [was] completed [six weeks later, and] he became owner of the Rench homestead on which he built a two story brick house and large barn ... Jacob acquired [160 acres] from Jacob Ingle 20 Jun 1829 [and] forty years later [another] 80 acres ... all of which he owned at the time of his death. ... About 1831 ... the distillery burned out [but] he rebuilt in 1833 adding a grist-mill ... Fire struck again in 1837; rebuilding, he sold the business in 1848 ... The Sugar Grove Flour Mill was in operation [143] years. ... It is said of [Jacob] that he was industrious and possessed of extraordinary business ability." (Excerpted from Honeyman)

Burial: Sugar Grove Cemetery, Covington, Miami County, Ohio, USA. Memorial ID 26510239
