CHARLES RENO was born March 14, 1754 in Prince William Co., VA, and died August 04, 1828 in Clinton Co., KY.

Charles Reno was born in Prince William County in 1754 and moved with his family, when he was about 5 or 6 years old, to Pattersons Creek, VA near present-day Romney, WV. When he was about 19 years old he moved with his family to Chartiers Creek in Washington County, PA near present-day Pittsburgh.

He married ALICE ELIZABETH TIPTON August 08, 1771 in Frederick Co., VA, which later became Shenandoah Co., daughter of JONATHAN TIPTON and ELIZABETH ADAMS. She was born 1757 in Frederick Co., VA, and died August 04, 1828 in Jefferson Co., TN.

Charles Reneau is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A095484.

Records show he was a Pvt. First Class, Capt. Charles Reed's 2nd Company, 4th Battalion, Washington County (PA) Militia in the Revolutionary War. He may have received land in Washington County, PA for his service in the Revolutionary War. No land or census records have been found for Charles in western Pennsylvania, but his father and brothers William, Benjamin, and Francis lived there, and his first four children were born in Allegheny County, PA.

He was in Washington County, North Carolina/Tennessee from 1788 through 1795. Charles was apparently a land speculator. There are many recorded deeds granted to and from him in Washington County and Carter County, Tennessee.

The Sinking Creek Baptist Church, organized in 1772 in what is now Carter County, TN, is the oldest church in Tennessee still in existance at its original location. Charles is shown on "A Register of Members of Sinking Creek Baptist Church, Book I to 1791" as being a member [Sketch of Sinking Creek Baptist Church, by Fred F. Hinkle, Church Historian] . At one time he was defellowshipped" by the church for "arguing and leaving the church in a rude and angry manner" but apparently he was later restored in good standing.

On page 10 of Record Book I, January 13, 1787 through August 13, 1791, it reads: "July the 01:1790 at a monthly meeting met according appointment met to Gether and Proseeds Busnesses as follows Charles Reno Requests a Coppy of his xcommunication and it is Granted to him and that is for obscenting him Self from the Church and for Refussing to hear the Church." Church records for 13 Jan 1787 to 13 Aug 1791 list as members Charles Reno, Elizabeth Tipton, Samuel Tipton, John Reno, Catherine Reno, William Reno, and Frances Tipton. The records also mention a dispute involving Jonathan Mulkey on 13 Apr 1794; and Sarah Reno found guilty of fornication on 13 Feb 1796.

Charles was one of the "schoolmasters" of Hughes School in the Sinking Creek Community. It is thought that he moved to Muddy Creek area of Jefferson County, Tenn., and that Elizabeth died there. In August 6, 1796, Samuel Tipton laid out a series of plots in what is now Elizabethton, the county seat of Carter County, and Charles Reneau purchased one of them for $10. Charles bought another parcel from Joseph Tipton on Jan. 20, 1806.

In an article in The Colonial Genealogist, 1978, Vol. 9 No. 3, "The Tiptons of Tennessee: an effort to straighten out the line", Dollye McAlister Elliott presents evidence that Charles' wife Elizabeth Tipton was the daughter of Jonathan Tipton and his third wife Elizabeth Adams, and the sister or half-sister of Joseph Tipton and the half-sister of Colonel John Tipton.

When Charles' eldest son John moved to Albany, Kentucky (near the Tennessee-Kentucky line), it appears he went with him, died there, and was buried there, but no burial spot has been found. John and his cousin, John Harris Reno, went to Overton County, Tenn. (now Pickett County) in 1788 and entered land there.

John Harris Reno and his wife later sold their land to cousin John.

About 1808, John Reno died and left his farm to his son Charles, who sold it to Nathaniel Taylor. Burial: Six Miles From Albany, Clinton, Kentucky, USA.
