During the Civil War, Charles Snyder was a Commissary agent for the Confederate War Department. He slaughtered cattle at the Homestead Inn and Tavern near Covington, Virginia, a business they bought in the 1850's, and sold the meat to feed the Confederate Army, according to the "Roanoke Times". He tanned hides for them also. When he died in 1863, he was owed money from the Confederate War Department. The executor of his estate was Mary Isabel Snyder's brother James H Renick, who was also a commissary agent for the South.[7]
Mary accidentally drowned while fishing on 21 March 1887 at the age of 65, in Ocean Springs, Jackson County, Mississippi, at the home of her son, William Renick Snyder, where she was living at that time.[8]
