Biography

Thomas Renick was part of a Southern Pioneer Family.

Thomas, son of George Renick and Margaret, was born sometime between 1708 and 1714 at Enniskillen, Fermanagh, North Ireland, and died intestate on 16 May 1751 at Frederick County, VA.[1]

Thomas' wife was possibly Mary Ann or Katherine, but a surname of Dugan or Hamilton is totally unproven. Children (surname RENICK):[1]

  1. Margaret - b. 1734, d. 1778; m. Felix SEYMOUR Jr
  2. George - b. 1736, d. 16 Mar 1778; m. Mary Jane WELTON
  3. Catherine 'Katy' - b. 1738, d. 3 Jul 1791; m. Abel RANDALL
  4. Thomas - b. circa 1740, d. before 1782; m. Elizabeth —
  5. Mary Ann - b. 1742, d. 1780; m. Thomas PARSONS
  6. William - b. 1746, d. after 15 Jul 1807; Ann Rachel HEATH
  7. James - b. 1747, d. between 1779 and 1782; m. Elizabeth YOAKUM/YOKEM
  8. Robert - bap. 7 Feb 1749, d. after 7 Jul 1749
  9. Jonathan 'John' - b. 10 Oct 1750, d. 14 Jan 1814; m. Mary HEATH

Thomas came to Philadelphia County, PA, circa 1719 with his parents and siblings William, Robert and Elizabeth. On 27 Mar 1738, Thomas obtained a warrant on 400 acres of the land originally patented to his father by James Logan, Secretary to William Penn at Paxtang Twp., Lancaster (now Dauphin) County, PA. In 1744, Thomas was named in the fee book of Col. James Wood. at Frederick County, VA. On 19 Mar 1747, Thomas sold his land in Paxtang to William Peters prior to moving to Virginia. All of his children stayed in Virginia (now WV) except John who went to Ohio.

On August 14, 1748, Thomas Renick obtained 270 acres in Frederick County Virginia on the Wappacomo or Great Southern Branch of the Potomac River. In 1766, 200 acres of land in Hampshire County, Virginia, previously owned by Thomas was deeded to George Renick (believed to be Thomas’ son). It is believed that his son George (grandson to Thomas's father George) is the father to William of Hampshire County who was the father to George who went to Clark County, Kentucky.[2]

George (s/o Thomas) and Mary Renick sold this property to Felix Seymour who was married to George's sister Margaret. That sale not only confirms the connection between Thomas Renick, his son George, and his son-in-law Felix Seymour, but also refutes the claim that Felix was the son-in-law of William Renick.

Buried Falling Springs VA.

Research Notes

This Thomas, s/o George, was the only man by this name who owned land in Lancaster county at that time. His children (Margaret, George, Catherine, Thomas, Mary Ann, William, James, Robert, and Jonathan) are often mistakenly assigned to William Renick and Ann Hamilton.[1]

Alternate DOB is 1708.

Alternate DOD is 01 Sep 1751 in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland. It is hard to believe that if he came to America and established himself there that he would die in Ireland. More research needed, but more likely that the death location is Virginia if he is buried there.

Note: was mistakenly attached to Margaret Lunz as a spouse. Removed Mar 2, 2107.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Renick-232 and Renick-99 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same parents and approximate dates. Discrepancies due to lack of solid early sources. George and Margaret Renick had only one son named Thomas who was known to have a son Thomas. Renick-232 has no further information to compare. Please merge. Thanks.
