Biography

Joseph was born about 1813. He is the son of Cornelius Rhodes and Margaret Clarke.

After moving to Missouri with his father Cornelius he settled in the Bois Brule Bottoms along the banks of the Mississippi River in Perry County, Missouri. He also had a home across the river on the bluffs of Chester, Illinois.

On November 17, 1834, the 21 year old Joseph Rhodes (son of Cornelius and Margaret Clark Rhodes), married the 16 year old Mary Bernice Morris (daugher of William and Mary Belchy)[1]

He died on February 4, 1877 near Claryville leaving a wife, 2 sons, and a daughter to mourn his loss. [2]

About 1813 - Birth - Kentucky.

1840 - United States Federal Census - In the 1840 census, Joseph Rodes is living in Perry County, Missouri with his family. The household consists of one free white male, 20 thru 29; two free white females under 5 and one free white female, 20 thru 29. One person is engaged in agriculture and the household consists of four people.[3]

1850 - United States Federal Census - In the 1850 census, Joseph Rhodes, 33, is living with his wife, Bernice, 32, in Bois Brule, Perry County, Missouri. Living with them are their children, Emily, 14; William, 5; Cyprian, 3; and Louisa, a newborn. Also with the family is 14-year-old Joseph Tucker.[4]

1860 - United States Federal Census - In 1860, Joseph Rhodes, 43, is living in Bois Brule, Perry County, Missouri, with his family, including his wife, Bernice, 39. Also enumerated were Emily Rhodes, 20; William Rhodes, 14; Louisa Rhodes, 9; Joseph Rhodes, 7; and Sarah Rhodes, 2.[5]

February 4, 1877 - Death - Claryville, Perry County, Missouri.

  • Both 1850 and 1860 Perry County Census records indicate Joseph was born in Kentucky probably in 1817 based on age of 33 and 43 listed respectively. A St. Marys Barrens Marriage Record indicates he was 21 years old when he married a 16 year old Mary Bernice Morris on November 17, 1834 (which would place his birth date as 1813).
