DANIEL GOTT (V) OF GOTT’S ISLAND This Daniel signed the Bernard petition as Daniel Gott Jr. He married Hannah Norwood of Gloucester, a sister of Joshua and Stephen Norwood who were pioneer settlers at Mt. Desert. In 1785 Daniel built a house at Bass Harbor which he occupied that year. This house he sold to John Gott Richardson and removed to Little Placentia Island in the spring of 1786. page 12 Daniel Gott, Mount Desert Pioneer

Daniel Gott, a brother of Stephen Richardson's wife, settled near the Richardson family, and lived there probably until 1789, when he obtained a deed to the two islands which lie off Bass Harbor Head. He moved to the larger island, now known as Gott's, and lived there until his death, June 7, 1814. Many of his descendants are still residents of Gott's Island. page 81 The Island of Mount Desert register with the Cranberry Isles, 1909-10

John G Richardson.—Samuel Read saith this lott was taken up by Daniel Gott Jr in 1785 he built his house there and moved in in the fall & left it next year. John G Richardson moved on in the spring of the year 1786 and has continued to this time having bought Daniel Gotts right as it is said. NB Daniel Gott hols a lott by his own possession This is the same Daniel Gott Jr it is said who was on this lott in 1785. page 445 Commissioners' Proceedings at Mount Desert. 1808

RICHARDSON BURYING GROUND AT BEECH HILL On the western slope of Beech Hill among the pine and spruce trees is the private burying ground of the Richardson family, descendants of the first settlers. Here lies John Gott Richardson who died Jan. 29, 1828, aged 67 years.

Sarah Gamage, his wife died April 17, 1810, aged 47. A granite marker records the death of Stephen Richardson (3rd of that name) 1768-1853 and that of his wife Margaret (Webber) 1774-1862. page 236 Traditions and records of Southwest Harbor and Somesville, Mount Desert island, Maine

Research Notes

1887 Beech Hill.

Horace Durgain owned a large lot of land between Southwest Harbor and Somesville including part of Robinson Mountain, now called Acadia. The ledges at Echo Hill have always been called Durgain’s Ledges. He sold this land to John G. Richardson of Beech Hill for one hundred dollars. Page 143 " Tradition & Records ..." by Thornton

References to Beach Hill are for the area North of Beach Mountain, lying between Long Pond and Dennings Pond. The trail leading from Bass Harbor to Southwest Harbor, then up over Beach Mountain to Somesville may be seen on the Plan of Mount Desert 1795 [see Image] A. Stanley 27 Dec 2021.

War of 1812 Southwest Harbor, Maine; The Battle or Skirmish of Norwood's Cove " ... Old John Richardson, another Revolutionary Veteran , lived on Beech Hill. He was entirely deaf, but he heard the summons but did not understand where the men were to assemble and so came walking down the slope on the north side of the cove in the midst of the action in full view of the British in their barge. His neighbors called to him to come around the other way so as not to expose himself, but he could not hear them and apparently had no fear for from behind a rock he calmly loaded and fired at the enemy who sent a charge from a gun to annihilate him, but when the dust and turf and stones cleared away, brave old John was loading and firing as if nothing had happened. ... DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

January 2002 - Reinstate the 1776 sticker as a per comment and adjustment to birth year.

3 months ago I had removed the 1776 sticker. Born only 1764 he must have been too young to serve. Checked the DAR, checked ancestry. He may have served in the War of 1812?

(I added his rank as a "Private" - obviously you can edit the sticker if he held some other rank)

I think John Gott Richardson may have lied about his age. Grave stone and service record reflect b. 1761. The Revolutionary War is not just the year 1776. The Revolutionary War period is April 19, 1775 – September 3, 1783. John G Richardson would be old enough to be a member of the MA Militia by 15 August 1780. Most able-bodied men in MA, between ages 16 and 60, during the 1775 to 1783 time period, were members of the MA militia.

Several secondary records reflect that John Richardson was known locally as a Rev. War veteran. Note that John Gott Richardson is listed in Soldiers Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War, Maine.

Reference NOTED: 30 March 1776 & 10 June 1776 _ Town of Mount Desert Island "The adjourned meeting opened at the time and place specified. Voted to raise and form a company of militia, and elected for officers, Ezra Young, Captain, Abiaham Somes, 1st Lieutenant, Levi Higgins, 2d. Lieutenant. ..."

"Voted that the committee of Correspondence, Safety and Inspection apply to Major Shaw for the provisions granted by the colonly'. Adjourned. James Richardson, Clerk." page 26 Mount Desert Island, and the Cranberry Isles by E. H. Dodge

The problem is that the Town of Mount Desert Island formed their own Militia unit in 1776. [MA Militia, Lincoln County] The names of the officers are given. No list/muster roll or alarm list of the men in the unit exists, as far as I know.

Many local secondary sources refer to John Got Richardson as a Revolutionary War veteran and he is listed as such by the Sons of the Revolutionary War, Maine in "Soldiers, Sailors, and Patriots of the Revolutionary War_Maine" by Carlton & Sue Fisher.
