Biography

I started researching my family history in the spring of 2016 when my grandmother passed away and my mother came in possession of a good deal of family history research that my grandfather had accomplished many years ago. His parents were born in Nova Scotia and are mentioned in the book Mabou Pioneers.

Adoption Theory

This story is consistent with, but not necessarily conclusively proven by, all DNA evidence collected so far.

My paternal grandfather, Phillip Edward (Lillie) Rickerd was adopted at a young age and nobody alive today that I have spoken with seems to be very sure of who his birth parents were. I have yet to obtain a birth record for him.

My current working theory is that he was the child of Edward Baatz and Allie Lillie. At the time of his birth, Allie was 14 and Edward was married to Luella Froats. Since these two clearly could not raise the child, Allie's brother, Harold Lillie, took in the child with his wife, Sadie Link. As far as everyone was concerned at the time, the child was theirs. Then, 5 years later, Harold died unexpectedly in a work accident. Harold and Sadie had five children of their own when Harold died.

The two youngest boys, James and Harold Jr, were adopted by their paternal grandparents. The two middle children, Mary and Floyd, were adopted by their aunt Olive Baatz and uncle Roy Lillie, who never had any children of their own. The two oldest children, Phillip and Helen, were adopted outside of the family. Phillip was adopted by Paul Willard Rickerd and Helen Azaria Courtade. Helen was adopted by the Verno family.

My Y DNA haplogroup is R1a - YP254, which is most common in modern-day Poland.

DNA Confirmation

Paternal DNA confirmed by auDNA match of 3,450 cM to Duane Rickerd. Maternal DNA confirmed by auDNA match of 3,463 cM to Mary MacDonald Rickerd.

I am in the following "DNA Circles" on Ancestry.com, which I use as evidence to mark my trail to each of these ancestors as "confident".

2nd Great Grandparents

3rd Great Grandparents

4th Great Grandparents

5th Great Grandparents

Your comment about Mary Smith's death date is incorrect. Two months must be added to "old calendar" dates to convert them to our present calendar. You can tell a date is from the old calendar if it is written as, for this example, the 6th day of the 3rd month of 1666. You must add 2 months and you get 6 May 1666. Old calendar dates were commonly used in those years.

Hi Chris,

I'm not certain about the connection you mention with George Washington Rowley and Nathanial. If you find evidence that would make that more accurate, please feel free to make corrections. I'm a bit busy for doing research right now. Best wishes!

We are indeed 9th Cousins through James Streeter. I have added you to my Wiki Cousins Space Page
