J. L. Riels, 83, a retired poultry/cattle farmer, of Mendenhall died Thursday, May 7, 2009 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, with burial in the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mendenhall handled arrangements. Mr. Riels was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter Pat (Truitt) Barnard; grandsons Scott M. Barnard and Brian Barnard; great-grandsons Sheldon Tibbets, Braydon Barnard, Haydon Barnard; and great-granddaughter Ashlynn Tibbetts, all of Mendenhall.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Loranzie and Janie Sullivan Riels; his first wife, Mattie D. Riels; and his second wife, Mozelle Grant Riels.
