I would love to contribute to the Lower Saxony area particularly the Osnabruck area as my ancestors lived close to there but the hoops you have to go through on here to get anywhere floors me. I have some historical plus individual information but to get it on here is just over my head.

You are not yet following our G2G tag (Germany) and are not yet a member of our Google Group. If you want to ask questions about Germany and collaborate with other Germany Project members, the project's Google Group is a good place to start. Also, the Germany Project has a Lower Saxony Team that you can join. The team page is HERE and has a lot of info and resources on the area.

What hoops do you feel you have to jump through on WikiTree? Have you looked at the new member information provided to you by your Greeter? One of the links (HERE) is a great way to get the info you need to get started on WikiTree.

WikiTree also has One Place studies - you might want to start one for the Osnabruck area once you have a little more experience on WIkiTree. See info on place studies HERE.

Hello. I have a Riepenhoff who has 2 profiles, #20 put on by Anon Ellerbrock in 2018 and #32 put on by me in 2021. I have more information than the first one but it says to merge with the lower number. Is there someone who can help me with this. I have more questions but I will get this done and then see about the others.

Hi again, Ronald,

To start the merge process, go to either of the profiles and go to the bottom and click to "initiate the merge". Do a side by side comparison them click "merge them".

If you have any trouble with this, let me know and I will start the merge.

Both managers need to agree to the merge. Although the new profile will have the older id, the info from both profiles can be retained.

Hi there,

Yes, Riepenhoff-20 is the older profile and that is the ID that will be kept after the merge.

You can send a message to the profile manager or initiate the merge and they will be notified. This profile manager is not a currently active member but they may still respond. If your merge proposal goes unanswered for 30 days, you can proceed without the other manager's participation. More about merging can be found here:

I have started the merge. Now I wait. Peggy, since you have tried to answer my question and seem to know a lot about genealogy and Wikitree, I want to give you a condensed version of what I have been doing in genealogy and ask you some questions. If you can't answer them all, maybe you can head me in the right direction. I started researching my direct family in 1978. That lasted about 3 weeks when I ran into a bunch of cousins I didn't know about. About 4 years later I had found where we came from in Germany and was getting information on them. By 1997 I was having trouble keeping up with everyone so I decided to write a family history. I had 300 copies printed in the winter of 1999, 563 pages with over 8,000 relatives. I started this when there was no or very little internet. No looking up sources on genealogy sites. I had to go to the "horses mouth" so to speak. A lot more interesting than looking at a bunch of figures and tables on the internet. The 300 books are all sold now except the one I have kept. More relatives want a copy so I am in the process of making it into an e-book and trying to update so of it. When I made the book I put in all the information I had, living and not. No one expressed any problems with that and all but a couple of books went to relatives. More people will see the e-book however, but if I leave out information on living people like you do at Wikitree, a lot of the information I have in the original book will be gone. Is there a place on the internet you could put an e-book and have it for relatives or a select group of people? Now on Wikitree, I think I was told that I could put someone I had talked to as a source but try to find a paper source for the information also? That will be easy for some and hard for others. If there is a profile on here who is connected to my tree and has someone over it, I need to get permission to put that person on my tree. But if there is no one who is watching over it then I can put it right on? And lastly, is there a way to look at the big overall tree? This is a lot of questions but I am not very computer savvy so a lot of what people talk about doing here is Greek to me. Thank you for any answered questions.

For the book you want to publish, you could create a free space page for it. You can choose the privacy settings for a space page, just like you can with a profile. More info here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Free-Space_Profile

Yes, an interview or conversation can be used as a source. More info on sources can be found here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources

You do not need permission to connect to a profile. You should consult with other profile managers if you are making any significant changes such as changes to parents, spouses,. Etc. or if you have any questions.

You can't see the whole tree, it's massive! There's some cool features on the family tree tab for any profile that provides some interesting ways to view that part of the tree.

The merger of John Riepenhoff has been completed by another person #20 and #32 but they have his wife mixed up. I can't figure out how to change that. Would you be able to tell me how to do that?

Hi Ronald,

What exactly is incorrect? Do you believe he was not married to Mary Eliza Simon? There are census sources that show he was married to an Eliza but no marriage source. His death record indicates he was married to Bernadina.

So, first find sources that provide documentation for his marriage(s), if possible. Then if he is connected to an incorrect spouse, you can disconnected the profile. To do this, go to his profile, click edit then click add/remove spouse.
