Biography

Mary Ellen Rigby was born April 12th 1865 in Firs Lane, West Leigh. She was the daughter of Thomas Rigby and Margaret (Hulme) Rigby. Her father was a glass works manager. She had one sibling when she was born, her brother Herbert Richard, who was two and two-thirds years older than her.

Edith Annie, her younger sister, was born on 4 May 1868 in Westleigh.

By April 2nd 1871, the family were living in Plane Lane, Abram, in the Glass Works yard. Mary's father was still working as the glass works manager. The three children were all still alive, and the two older ones were now in school. The family had a seventeen-year-old domestic servant, Mary Ann Wood, who was from Abram.

Mary's younger brother, Thomas Stock Rigby, was born 3 Oct 1871 in Firs Lane.

According to a member of the Rigby family, Thomas (senior) had episodes of drinking heavily and eventually disappeared, which perhaps explains the difficulty in finding his death registration between 1871 and 1881 in Wigan area.

By April 3rd 1881, Mary's mother was living in Off Plane Lane, Gores Houses, and was reporting herself a widow. All four of the children were still alive; Herbert was working as a glass maker, the two girls as creelers at a cotton mill, and Thomas was still in school.

Mary married John Taylor on June 8th 1889, in Leigh district.

John Taylor probably died in the final quarter of 1889, aged 26.

Mary married Hugh Jones on August 27th 1892, at the Wesleyan Chapel in Pennington. She was living in Plank Lane, Westleigh.

By March 31st 1901, Hugh and Mary were living at 78 Twist Lane, Leigh. Hugh had his own shop selling household furnishings. They had three children - John Edward (6), Herbert (3) and Lily (1).

By April 2nd 1911, they were living in Common Lane Street, Westleigh. Mary's mother Margaret was living with them. They were still running a furniture shop, and had seven children, the eldest of whom was to become the founder of modern computational chemistry.

Hugh died August 7th 1914.

Margaret died on Christmas Day 1920.

Mary died April 5th 1939 in Leigh district, aged 73. She was buried in Leigh Cemetery.
