Biography

Hannah (Riggs) Snow was a Tennessean.

Hannah (Riggs) Snow was buried in Scotland County, Missouri, Cemeteries.

Hannah's place of birth was reported in the census as Indiana, Tennessee, and Missouri (see table below). Her children generally gave her birth place as Kentucky in the 1880 and subsequent censuses, with a few exceptions for Missouri, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Hannah and her family may not have been enumerated in the 1870 census or may not have been enumerated in an expected manner, leading to a record not being discovered yet for this year.

Marriage

Hannah married "Edward" Snow in 1827 on the 8th of June in Boone County, Missouri. The name "Edward" may be recorded in error for "Edmund" or may have been a middle name. ^[6]

Death

Hannah died the day after Christmas in 1885, according to her headstone, or Christmas day itself, according to her obituary..^[7][8] The obituary says that Hannah died of pneumonia and had been a member of the "old school Baptist church" for many years. Her headstone in Clark Cemetery iis weathered but the birth and death dates remain plainly visible.

Hannah estate was probated in 1889; the documents list the names of her children. ^[9]

Proposed Father: Daniel Riggs

Linking Daniel Riggs as Hannah's father is based on him being of a likely age in a close location, having many unaccounted-for daughters per the census, and other likely candidates presenting issues that contradict what we know. For example, Daniel's brother Reuben had children born in January of 1810 and 1812 - conflicting with Hannah's birth in 1811 - and while specific birth dates are recorded for all three of them, it's still possible that a date "drifted" along the way.

Alvy Ray Smith, FASG, discusses both Daniel and Reuben in the eighth volume of his comprehensive and frequently updated study of Riggs families in North America.^[10]

Hannah is not mentioned in Smith's work, but on page 105 he does note that in 1830 Edmund Snow and several Salings resided by Jonathan Riggs, son of Reuben, who was in a dispute with his "cousin" Samuel, son of Daniel.

(Smith also briefly discusses Mahlon Riggs who married Hannah's granddaughter Nancy. Mahlon was a descendant of Reuben.)

Whether Hannah's father is Daniel may eventually be sorted out via autosomal DNA segment mapping to her mother's line. Unfortunately, little is known about Nancy, Daniel's wife, and possible siblings of Hannah's husband Edmund married into the family of Reuben Riggs' wife Catharine Saling. Furthermore, two of Daniel's probable children (Martha and Nancy) married two of Reuben's probable children (John and Reuben Jr.).

The only clue we have about Hannah's mother is that in the 1880 census her mother's place of birth is recorded as "Ireland". However, this census also lists Hannah's birthplace as "Missouri", and she is living in the household of her son-in-law, further compounding the possibility that the person who spoke to the census taker may not have been fully informed or may have overstated the closeness of their Irish heritage. (Catharine Saling, wife of Reuben, was living with her son in 1850 when her birth place was recorded as North Carolina^[11], further ruling out Reuben.)
