Biography

Maxaline was born November 3, 1866 in Longs Creek, Breathitt County, Kentucky to Granville "Lawyer Gran" Riley and Sarah Jane Baker. Some trees show or Isabelle "Icy" Burton as her mother, but Icy was apparently her step-mother, not her biological mother.

Her brothers and sisters included:

Martha (1867 - 1943)
Robert B. "Robin" (1868 or 29 May 1868 - 22 May 1940)
George W. (1871 or 1873 - 1914)
Edward (03 Jul 1872 - d. 21 May 1926)
Betsey Margaret "Maggie" (22 May 1874 - 1954)
Elizabeth (1875- )
Wiley (1877 or 23 May 1879 - 03 Jul 1924 or 12 Jan 1929)
Betsey Margaret "Maggie" (22 May 1874 - 1954)
Elizabeth (1875- )
Edmond (1878 - ) John D. (1883 - 1927)

She married Alexander Brock on August 24, 1884 in Longs Creek, Breathitt County, Kentucky.

She appeared on the 1870 census in Breathitt, Kentucky.

She appeared on the 1880 census in Crockettsville, Breathitt, Kentucky.

She married James C. Smith in 1892.

She passed away December 3 or 4, 1954 in Letcher County, Kentucky.

She is buried in Kelley Stamper Cemetery, Roxana, Letcher County, Kentucky.

Maxaline is listed as #19 on the pedigree chart in the book Morris Fork Kentucky: Family Stories and Genealogies from Breathitt County and Eastern Kentucky. This book states that she and Alexander Brock divorced, and both remarried and had additional children. This book also confirms that her mother was Sarah Jane Baker, and not Isabelle Burton.

Note: Some family trees and Find-a-grave show that Maxaline's mother was Isabelle "Icy" Burton, however, Massie's death certificate shows that her mother was Sarah Jane "Sally" Baker. Sally married three times, and Granville also married more than once.

Riley-803 and Riley-6990 appear to represent the same person because: Both Massie and Massy are the daughter of Granville Riley and either Icy Burton or Sally Baker, all details are the same, the only issue is determining whether Sally Beker or Icy Burton was her biological mother.
