Biography

Penton was born in 1886 in the Port Adelaide district, his father had a bakery there (his parents were engaged in the bakery business for 20 years at Rose Water and 33 years at Largs), and therein he learnt his trade. Later, he associated himself with his brother in a bakery at Prospect, and then he came to Gawler taking over the established premises of Levick, where he remained for several years.

BUNYIP Friday 28 June 1918

CHANGE OF BUSINESS. MRS. S. LEVICK having disposed of m her BAKERY BUSINESS to MR. P. RIX, of Prospect, wishes to THANK her Customers for their continuous and generous support, and asks them to extend same to her successor.

MR. PENTON RIX of Prospect, having PURCHASED the well known BAKERY BUSINESS from Mrs. Levick, asks for a CONTINUANCE of PATRONAGE from her Customers. Mr. Rix has been in the Bakery Business all his life, and guarantees the best of bread, cakes, and small goods.

Realising that business must prosper, Mr. Rix secured property at Willaston, and he established the first machine made bread factory in the district.

Attending strictly to his business, he maintained his interests until his family had grown in years; and taking his son into partnership he released himself to some extent and accepted the invitation as a candidate for Council honors in Greater Gawler. Opposed by two well known residents, he topped the poll and became a representative for Willaston ward.

EVASION OF FLOUR TAX

First Case Of Its Kind Willaston Baker To Pay £500

The first prosecution under the Flour Tax Act for fraudulently attempting to evade payment of flour tax came before Mr. E. J. R. Morgan, S.M., in the Adelaide Police Court yesterday, when Penton Rix, a baker, of Willaston, was fined £50 and ordered to pay £450. a sum representing treble the amount of tax evaded.

(Taken from his Obituary) in the Bunyip on 10th Jan 1936. "The death of Cr. Penton Rix, at his home at Willaston, early on Sunday morning, was totally unexpected by his friends and caused a great shock. Virtually a young man — he was 49 years of age — in recent years he gave his services in the interests and welfare of the town, and his energy together with his acumen made him a valuable asset to Gawler."

His remains were interred in the Willaston cemetery on Monday 6th ,
