Biography

For descendants of Charles Roberts, Jr. and Frances Langston and their families: FRANCES LANGSTON daughter of JOSEPH LANGSTON and AGNES RAGLAND. AGNES RAGLAND married EPHRAIM MERRITT and after he died in 1760 in NC she married JOSEPH LANGSTON. Frances is the sister of RAGLAND LANGSTON. FRANCES LANGSTON married CHARLES ROBERTS, JR. 12 Jan 1782 in Granville County, NC. CHARLES ROBERTS, SR. to CHARLES ROBERTS, JR. in Deed Book 2 p. 390-391 in Orange Co., NC. dated 26 Aug 1782 a tract on the North side of Flat River.. Rocky Creek.. Signed: CHARLES ROBERTS Test: STEPHEN MERRITT and JOSEPH LANGSTON, JR. About 1811 Charles Roberts, Jr and his wife Frances Langston Roberts removed from Granville Co., NC to Logan Co., Kentucky. He paid taxes in 1812 on 200 acres of land which said land dated 4 Jan 1812 was between Charles Roberts, Jr and Ragland Langston. Charles Roberts, Jr. died 1813 in Logan Co., Ky. His widow Frances Langston Roberts paid taxes in 1814 on the land with her son Ephraim Roberts paying taxes on the same land. The inventory list of Charles Roberts, Jr. estate was submitted 11 Dec 1813 in Logan County, Ky. Frances bought most of the inventory.The value and original distribution occurred 20 June 1814 in Logan Co.,Ky. The settlement was long and complicated due to the fact that their son, Langston Roberts, was alive at the time of the land settlement and was a minor and died before the final settlement which required the estate to be refigured and distributed to the survivors. In the depositions of the children of Charles and Frances Roberts, Jr. "old Uncle Ragland Langston" was mentioned and he was at the sale in 1812. It took until 1840 in Logan Co., Ky. when Fanny (Frances) Roberts who was deceased at that time for the sale of property and the estate to be settled. 20 Dec 1813 Logan Co., Ky Charles Roberts, Jr., Dec'd-Inventory-Apprs' Jonathan Smith, John Keys, Elisha Prince, p. 316 21 Feb 1814 Charles Roberts Dec'd-- Admr Fanny Roberts and Ragland Langston at sale, p. 328. Charles Jr. Roberts Dec'd will in Logan Co., Ky. on 16 June 1814 names wife Fanny--leg. William Wilson and wife Fanny; Joseph Surles and wife Patsy; Ephraim Roberts; William Lewis and wife Agnes; Pharaby Roberts; GEORGE WAGGONER and wife SALLY (SARAH)..; Allen Mauze and wife Rachel; Charles Roberts; William Roberts, Langston Roberts--division by Elisha Prince--John Keys p. 351.

Ky Probate Records 1727-1990 Logan Co., Wills records, Index, 1812-1817, Vol. 1 In the following document -I am going to take shortcuts on numerals as all are written out --I did not find a will but I did find Valuation of property items and then the results of the estate sale. Also this names all ten children and some spouses so I am going to keep count them which is not is the document.

Pursuant to an order of the Honorable (County) of Logan County; directing us to make a division of the estate of Charles Roberts, deceased; which are as followeth (vizt). The valuation of the slaves, amounting to $2602.50.

Fanny Roberts, widow of the said deceased. Dower in the slaves (to wit). One negro woman called big Jane, one negro girl called Hannah, one negro boy called Spencer-valued $867.37.

To be divided among the ten children of the said deceased. $1735.17. Equal to one child's share of the slaves $173.57 (Except the widow's dower)

1. William Wilson and his wife Fanny loted one negro woman called Easter valued to $300.00; and they have got to pay to the said estate $126.49. 2. Joseph Surles and his wife Patsy, one negro girl called little Jane valued to $315, and they have got to pay to the said estate$141.49. 3. Ephraim Roberts, one negro girl called Tillis valued to $315.00 and he has got to pay to the said estate $141.49. 4. William Lewis and Agnes, his wife, one negro boy called Frank valued to $300.00 and they have got to pay to the said estate $126.49. 5. Pharaby Roberts, one negro boy called Jack valued to $215.00 and they have got to pay to the said estate $41.49. 6. George Waggoner and Sally, his wife, one negro girl called little Easter valued to $150.00 and they have got to receive $23.50. 7. Allen Mayzs (Moize) and Racheal, his wife, one negro girl called Sendisilla valued to $140.00 and they have got to $33.50. 8. Charles Roberts, who is a miner, is to receive $173.51 in lieu of a negro. It being his proportion of the valuation of the slaves (except the widow's dower). 9. William Roberts, who is a miner, is to receive $173.51 in lieu of a negro. It being his proportion of the valuation of the slaves (except the widow's dower). 10. Langston Robert, who is a miner, is to receive $173.51 in lieu of a negro. It being his proportion of the valuation of the slaves (except the widow's dower).

We do hereby certify that the foregoing contains all of the property of the said estate that we brought to our view and what we have divided. Given under our hands the eighteenth day of June One Thousand Eight Hundred Fourteen (1814)
