Biography

Reverend Gilbert Robertson, A.M. , born 15th September, 1702. He was appointed catechist in the parish of Contin, 31st August, 1726, which he resigned 6th September following, and became tutor to Sir Harry Munro of Fowlis, whom he accompanied to the Academy of the celebrated Rev. Dr Philip Doddridge of Northampton and studied Divinity under him, and was licensed to preach the Gospel 22nd August, 1737, and ordained 7th June, 1739, The account of the Munros of Fowlis appended to Dr Doddridge's life of Colonel Gardener was supplied to him by Mr Gilbert Robertson. After a petition from the whole parish of Kincardine, county Ross, on the 7th April, 1742, Mr Robertson was presented by George, Earl of Cromarty, 10th July and admitted 31st August, 1742, minister of that parish, The Rev. Gilbert Robertson married, 13th October, 1747, Christian, eldest daughter and co-heir of the Rev. John Bayne, minister of Dingwall, by his wife Ann, daughter of Peter Bethune of Culniskea and Jean, eldest daughter of Sir John Munro of Fowlis, 4th Baronet, "The Presbyterian Mortar-piece." Mr Bayne was first Presbyterian minister of Dingwall after the Revolution from 1716 to 1737. Mrs Robertson died young about 1764. Mr Gilbert Robertson died 17th March, 1774, after an eminently useful ministry of 31 years. There were 24 elders in the parish during the latter part of his ministry.
