Biography

John was born about 1686 in Charles County, Maryland. He was the son of John Robey III and Sarah Hines (Unknown) Robey.

On 29 August 1726, John Robey was among the legatees of John Robey Sr. of Charles County, deceased, who released the widow, Sarah Robey, from all legacies that may be due from her.[1]

On 22 December 1738, he joined his siblings in ceding his rights in the estate of his deceased brother, Peter Robey, to his mother, Sarah.[2]

In 1741, Thomas and Richard Robey testified in a neighbor's land dispute. Thomas Robey stated that he heard his "brother John deceased" make a statement on the case, suggesting that John had died before 1741.[3]

Research Notes

Sarah Smallwood was originally included in this WikiTree profile as the wife of John Robey, but that has been removed because there is no evidence to date (7/2022) regarding his wife's maiden name. We do know he was married and had children, though (for example, his son William wrote a will, in which he was designated "William of John.") William G. Robey's genealogy of the Robey family suggests that John's wife may have been Sarah Berry, but he only presents that as a conjecture, with no supporting documentation.[4]
