Biography

SAMUEL ROBINSON SR. was the 3d son (and 6th child) of William Robinson, born on April 20th, 1680. His parents had emigrated first to Newton, Mass., later removing to Cambridge, Mass., on Brattle Square.

Samuel married his first wife, SARAH MANNING, on 23 March 1704. She was born on 26 August 1681, the daughter of Samuel & Abiel (Wight) Manning. Her father was a man of means and a Representative.

In 1707, at the age of 27, Samuel Sr. bought a house and 3/4 acre in Cambridge at the southwest corner of Battle Square and Brattle Street, where he kept a tavern until June 13th, 1721. His name is enrolled among the innkeepers of Cambridge as having received a license from 1714-1720. At that time, he sold his estate and moved to Westborough, Mass.

Samuel & Sarah (Manning) Robinson had two children who lived. Sarah died on 19 July 1709, just three months after the birth of her youngest child, Dorothy, and was buried, I suspect, at Cambridge, Massachusetts.

When the child Dorothy was 2-1/2 years old, Samuel married again, Elizabeth Brigham, the daughter of Capt. Samuel Brigham of Marlborough, Mass. They had three children, two of whom lived to adulthood. Samuel died at Westborough in 1724 (see my note in References). The administration of his will was granted to Elizabeth on 24 Apr 1724. On 24 Feb 1725, Elizabeth’s brother, Jedekiah Brigham, was appointed guardian to the only son, Samuel, then in his 19th year. http://josfamilyhistory.com/htm/hopkins/robinson/robinson-gen1.htm#samsenior

Samuel's daughter Dorothy has Elizabeth Bingham linked as her mother, but Samuel's bio suggests that Sarah Manning is her mother; does Dorothy's mother need to be changed?

Question - why does the biography say Samuel was born in England, but the details in the profile state he was born in Massachusetts. Which is correct? Samuel is my 7th great grandfather, by the way. Thank you!

The biography is likely incorrect, since Samuel's older brother William was born 7 years earlier (1673) in Newton or Cambridge MA. The reference in the biography to a birth in Bristol seems to derive from an unattested web log (http://josfamilyhistory.com/htm/hopkins/robinson/robinson-gen1.htm#samsenior). I will edit the biography appropriately. Thanks for the heads-up.
