Thomas Robinson, Mariner Thomas Robinson was a mariner, he sold the ship "Speedwell," in which many emigrants came to this country, to Thomas Witherly of Southwark, county Surrey, July 27, 1640.[1]
The Thomas Robinson, who sold the "Speedwell" is treated as a separate person by Anderson's Great Migration Directory.[2]
Parents: Rev. John Robinson and Bridget (White). There is no indication that he was their son. They didn't have a known son named Thomas
Wife Margaret and child Jane: Jane Robinson of Thomas & Margaret Robinson was born 16th -- 7th month 1646.[3][4]
Thomas was married to Silence in 1646, so this cannot be his child, and Margaret was not his wife.
Ephraim. Alleged child of Thomas & Margaret, Ephraim d. at Boston 22 Sep 1661[5] Ephraim of Thomas Robinson died 22 Sep 1661 Boston.[6]
Given the fact that there is more than one Thomas Robinson in the vicinity of Boston, and that a different Thomas was married to Margaret, there is not enough information on Ephraim to prove that he was the son of this Thomas. He died before the known wills. Was he son of this Thomas and 1st wife Silence or a different Thomas and Margaret, or some other parents completely?
Josiah. Not 100% positive since birth not recorded. But a good possibility See below.

Biography

Birth: Thomas Robinson, was born about 1610 in England. The date is based on his marriage in 1630. The place is assumed from that marriage also. His parents are not known.

Marriage One: Thomas married Silence Boyse, daughter of Rev. John Boyse, 8 Dec 1630 in Halifax, England.[7]
Three known children were baptized at Halifax.
1. 2 Sep 1632 John son of Thomas Robinson Hallif. baptized[7]
2. 1 Jan 1634/5 Samuel son of Thomas Robinson Hallif. baptized[7] The will of Samuel Robinson of Boston in New England, merchant, was dated 13 Jan 1661/2 and proved 20 April 1664. "To my honored father Thomas Robinson, ... To my brothers Thomas James and Joseph and to my sister Mary Robinson... I appoint my honored father and my brother John Robinson executors....[8]
3. 1 Jun 1635 James son of Thomas Robinson Hallif. baptized[7]
Did they have unrecorded children after their arrival? Ephraim?
Josiah: Alleged child of Thomas & Margaret (the mistaken first wife). Josiah Robinson, apprentice to Mr Joseph Rocke, died in Boston 17 April 1660.[9] There is no known birth/baptismal record and Josiah died before the known wills of Samuel and Thomas. Joseph Rocke, a merchant, was married to Elizabeth Coggan sister of Thomas's second wife Mary.
Selene Robinson, wife of Thomas, joined the Roxbury Church in 1638. Her husband never joined.[10]
She acknowledge a deed April 1651[11]

Thomas and family immigrated to New England in 1636. Thomas was granted twelve acres in Roxbury in the first division and another tweve acres of third division. He sold this land to John Weld of Roxbury 11 November 1662 (recorded 5 Dec 1662)[12]

30 April 1651 Thomas Robinson of Scittuate of New Plymouth in New England in America yeoman... For consideration of 33 pounds sold to Joseph Shaw and William Richards, planters of Weymouth, a parcel of upland and the mash that went with it called Springfeild in Scituate of 90 acres. He also promised that his wife Silence would yield up her Right in the thirds of said land. Which she did on the last of April 1651. Interestingly Joseph sold his 45 acres the same day and William Richards sold his 45 acres the following October.[11]

Marriage Two: Thomas Robinson of Scituate was married to Mary Woodey, widow 10:11:52 (10 Jan 1652 [/3?])[13][5] Mary was the daughter of John Cogan.[5] She died in Boston 26 Oct 1661.[12]

"Though my wife hath not carryed her selfe as a wife should have towards me, but Contrary to the Law of God & Man hath withdrawne her selfe from Living with mee as she ought to Doe" He left her £10.[5] Her will dated 21 Aug 1666 and proved 16 Nov 1667 mentions her former husband Richard Sherman[15]

- book with image for marriage of Thos. Robinson and Mary Woodey:

  • "Massachusetts, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records, 1626-2001," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QG1K-FTJN : 29 November 2018), Thomas Robinson and Mary Woodey, 1652; citing Marriage, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States, Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth, Boston; FHL microfilm 007011047.

It didn't look like there was a source beside son James either so here is the specific image:

I know that the Massachusetts register is cited but since it is a protected profile I couldn't see if it was specific to Boston or if there are images available so I will only leave these two for now in case it is redundant. Cheers! Becky

Not a typo. She appeared as Silence in at least one record and as Selene in another. Not uncommon for this era

Under the "biography" heading, his wife Silence is mentioned and then later is called Selene. Typo?

Yes sure Anne, and I was thinking if perhaps we should mark his parents as uncertain, or remove him as their son, because according all info he wasn't ?

And if you're interested I can add you or the Puritan Migration Project if they also have a Project profile, as manager ?

Just let me know what you think is best or prefer ;)

Greets,

Bea

ps: and yes some of the children probably are connected to the wrong mother as well eeh.

Bea do you want to consider removing the research notes at the bottom? Margaret was not his wife but the wife of another Thomas, They had one known child jane in Boston 1646.

At the beginning of the bio it said m. Silence (I added Boyse and children), Mary Cogan and Eliza Sherman. Later in the bio says married Margaret. Margaret may have Silence's children.  ???

Thomas belongs to the children that are claimed by some to be children of John Robinson and Bridget wife (without source)

So I think it's best if we 'correct' his (this Thomas's) place of Birth, mark the parents as uncertain and merge the duplicate, which according the info and sources added at both profiles they are ?

posted by Bea (Timmerman) Wijma
Hi Kristina,

I think they probably are duplicates, but indeed it needs some research, the wifes (Mary Cogan) were duplicates as well, so those are merged now.

What I'm wondering about is if Thomas really was a son of John Robinson and Bridget White ? Which probably is why this Thomas now has Leiden for place of Birth, according his Bio it was England before and he was imported without parents...so I would like to set them as unmerged match for now and look for some sources and more info if that's ok ?

Greets from the Netherlands,

Bea

Robinson-3187 and Robinson-2241 do not represent the same person because: Different birth and death places, different years. The only matching thing is the name Thomas Robinson, since both Thomas and Robinson are fairly common names I do not believe there is enough evidence to merge these two profiles.
Robinson-3187 and Robinson-2241 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, same marriage date. Coggen.
