Caution: Rogers' lineages were affected by Gustav Anjou, a genealogy fraudster who made his living writing false pedigrees in the early 1900s; sadly, portions of this profile appear to fit Anjou's modus operandi. [1]

Biography

Bernard was the son of John Rogers and Adriana (Pratt) de Weyden. [2] He may have been born in Wittenberg, Germany before his father returned to England in 1548 (see his father's profile).
He, along with his mother and siblings, witnessed his father’s burning at the stake in 1555.[3]
No records indicate Bernard had longevity into full adulthood.[4][5]
Burial: Barnard Rogers, buried 11 November 1563, at St Dunstan in the West, City of London.[6]

Research Notes

The first known mention of Bernard Rogers was made by renowned genealogist, Joseph L. Chester, in his 1861 publication on the life of John Rogers, Martyr. [5] Bernard resurfaces in a 1911 family chronicle published by John C. Underwood, wherein Underwood posed unsourced claims of ancestry to the martyr through this son. In doing so, Underwood alleged Bernard Rogers married an unnamed wife in 1564 and had one son, Thomas Matthew, b. 1565. [7] It is now believed these were fictitious claims crafted by Underwood using resources provided in part by genealogy fraudster Gustav Anjou. (See discussion and more notes re: this topic, if desired.)

Wives

Bernard has previously been shown as husband of three different people, with all the marriages said to have taken place in 1564:
No sources have been given, and very obviously it strains credibility to think that he could have married three women, two in Scotland one in Wittenberg, in the same year. In the absence of anything to elucidate this, the alleged wives are currently all detached. There is a possibility that Bernard never married - see research note on his death.
As far as Agnes Carter is concerned, it is likely that there has been confusion with Agnes, who was the widow of someone last name Carter and who married John Rogers, grandfather of the fiery preacher John Rogers of Dedham, known as Roaring John Rogers.
As far as Mary Unknown and Ann Leete are concerned, Bernard’s brother John married a Mary Leete, whose father was a lawyer of Cambridgeshire, and there may be confusion with her.

Children

There do not appear to be any primary sources linking Bernard Rogers to the children currently attached to this profile.
This profile has previously, without sourcing**, suggested that by his marriage to Mary Unknown Bernard had these children:
  • Thomas Matthew Rogers, born 1565, who married circa 1586 to Miss McMurds
  • Jiles (Giles) Rogers
  • Samuel Rogers who was the father of Robert Rogers, who married Francis Russell. They were said to be the parents of Hugh Rogers.
(**See Source notes here:  : [8] --added per C-213 20:16, 18 September 2019 (UTC))
Other children have been shown in the past on WikiTree as having Agnes Carter as their mother, with no sourcing.

Death

Bernard's brother Daniel wrote his will on 10 February 1590/91 in which bros. John and Ambrose inherit legacies; no other siblings are mentioned, including Bernard, suggesting he was deceased and had no living adjuncts to inherit legacies. ~ kc 20:16, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
This profile has previously shown two death dates, without sourcing:
  • 1583 in Scotland
  • 20 February 1609 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire.
There is, however, a burial record for a Barnard Rogers, dated 11 November 1563, at St Dunstan in the West, City of London.[6] If this burial record is for Bernard, son of John Rogers the martyr, then Bernard would have been about 20 years old when he died, too young to be married with several children. The Rogers family do have a known connection to the parish of St Dunstan in the West, as Bernard's brother Ambrose Rogers was living there in 1592, when he applied for his marriage license.[9] ~ Donnelly-2171 11:17, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
While identified as a known son of the martyr, "Chester found no evidence that Bernard had any posterity." [4][5]

From an online family tree

He received some of his education in Germany and then returned [sic] to England when he was an adult. Not much is known about Bernard other than the fact he moved to northern England and then Scotland where he married. Nothing is known about his wife but we know he had at least one son - Thomas Matthew - who was probably named after his grandfather's use of the pseudonym when he published his English version of the Bible. He could, of course, also have been named for Matthew Furneaux, one of his ancestors. [10]
This information is unsourced. In the absence of sourcing, it should be regarded as speculative.

Rodgers-1184 and Rogers-136 appear to represent the same person because: duplicate

After discussion in G2G, I have now detached Bernard from his previously shown wives, and added a research note. Given the clear confusion about who Bernard married (if he married at all), I have also removed his previously shown wife Agnes Carter as mother of two of Bernard's postulated children, again with a research note.

I have just noticed that the main bio gives a third wife - Ann Leete - with the same 1564 marriage year! - and again with no source. Ann’s profile gives no good sources. The best way to handle all this is probably through a research note, listing the three people who have been postulated as wives, and not formally linking any of them as wives. Unless someone can find sources, the uncertainties are considerable, but I will ask a question in G2G - my third in a matter of a few days on the family of John Rogers the martyr. Bernard’s brother John did marry a Mary Leete: she was from a Cambridgeshire family.

The profiles of both the wives shown here are effectively unsourced. Josephine C Frost in the work cited in sources says the name of his wife is unknown - Internet Archive. At the least, I think we should mark both wives as uncertain, and as Gillian Thomas implies, there seems to be no source for his having married twice in the same year or having had 2 wives. There is also, I think, no good source for his having a middle name Fitz. Finally, he may not have been the 5th son of John Rogers the martyr: two different Visitations list the sons in different orders, and in any event the order in which children are listed in Visitations is not always reliable or significant. I plan to do some work on this profile shortly.

Does anyone have any sources to add relating to Bernard's marriage? The bio says that the name of his wife is unknown. At the moment he is married to two women in the same year. I am wondering if these two profiles should be merged into the LNAB Unknown. Thanks for your assistance in sorting this out.

I would like to remove Agnes Carter Rogers as a spouse, as she seems to be connected to the incorrect husband. Please contact me if you want to discuss, otherwise I'll detach in a couple of days. Thanks.

Rogers-17258 and Rogers-136 appear to represent the same person because: Both son of John the Martyr.
Rogers-7025 and Rogers-136 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents.

Rogers-12624 and Rogers-136 appear to represent the same person because: This person is the same due to same parents, siblings, children, one wife. Dates match on the birth. Death date needs to be corrected and middle name of Fitz needs to be added. As per message on Rogers-136, there is a Rogers DNA Project link on Rogers-12624 that can be used for further information and research into the Rogers family line. Thank you for your patience as the information was looked into, compared, and fixed.

I am now approving the merge of Rogers-136 and Rogers-12624. The death date on Rogers-136 needs to be fixed as the death date is the same date he married Mary Rogers. He actually died in 1583 in England, not 1564 in Scotland. There is a Rogers DNA Project that has been included as a source on Rogers-12624 for further information and research. Thank you for your patience.

Rogers-12624 and Rogers-136 are not ready to be merged because: I adopted this profile awhile ago. I am going to follow up on the research to better prepare the profile for a merge. Please give me adequate time to get this done as I see this is not the first time that this merge proposal has been made. I do apologize that it was not done before hand but I will have this done within a couple of days to effectively merge in a mannerly fashion.
