From the North Carolina website as follows:
Readers are encouraged to verify information contained in this chapter with their own research. There are errors, and source documents from two centuries ago have been misinterpreted. Rev. Rankin assumed that anyone living near the church must have been a member, and attributes some people to the membership who were in fact Quakers. “War” in these notes refers to the Revolutionary War. Unfortunately, Rev. Rankin did not cite his sources, or footnote his statements.....
....text deleted.... James (Gowdy) married Rebecca, daughter of John Ross, in 1795 and died shortly thereafter; Rebecca married Joel Murray. William Gowdy, Sr., died in 1795.
Henry, James and John Ross appear to have been brothers. All lived on Horsepen Creek about 1773. Their father may have been located here, but no record of him has been found. Henry married a daughter of ruling elder John Anderson, and moved to Tennessee about 1797; James married and lived just across the road from the new Battle Ground Methodist Church; John married Mary, daughter of Robert Mitchell, and their children were Rebecca, Nancy, Margaret, Mary, Jane, Thomas, John, James and Andrew.
Notes:
l. John Ross married Sarah Jackson. John Ross is associated with the estate of Hugh Ross in Elizabeth City (Hampton), Virginia. John Ross is thought to be part of a group of Rosses from Scotland to Virginia, who migrated in part to North East North Carolina and other places. It was James Ross who actually married Mary Mitchell (See Genealogies/pedigrees for Mary Mitchell, James Ross). Genealogy of Robert Mitchell shows daughter Mary and James Ross. Robert Mitchell was an inhabitant of Chester county, Penn. I have a photocopy of a 1774 deed from Robert Mitchell and wife to Henry Ross, and another 1774 deed from Robert Mitchell and wife to James Ross (019045). Also, James Ross has a deed that says wife Mary in Guilford Co., 1785. 2. Another person of the same name, James Ross Sr., who married Mary Woods, and then Jean Shaw in Guillford County, has a will 1789, in Rowan County, NC. (Guilford was formed in part from Rowan Co, NC.) James Ross Sr. has a son Henry on will of 1789 in Rowan Co, NC. A deed of 1785 in Rowan to Henry Ross says Henry Ross is of Guilford County. So, Henry and James could to be sons of James Ross, of Rowan Co, NC. Thus, not brothers of John Ross. Henry Ross was the Trustee of Guilford County at one time. 3. There are another two brothers, James and Henry Ross of Martin County, Scottish Rosses, whose father John was a JP., will 1792, Martin County, NC ; But these two names, as well as Martin Ross, are later in the 1800 census in Anson County, NC. and do not appear to be the same as the Guilford County James and Henry. 4. Hughes map has John Ross first in Guilford in 1782. Recent information is that the land was warranted in 1778-79.
