Biography

Jean Baptiste Rougeau was born in New Orleans sometime in the 1730's based on the year of his parent's marriage (1730) and that he himself first wed, to Marguerite Demouy on 14 Aug 1759 in Mobile, Alabama where he was serving as the greffier and notary of the city.[1] One source suggests he was born in 1738.[2] but that would mean he was only 21 at the time he married. He and Marguerite had at least one child, a daughter named Marguerite who was born at the estimated year of 1760. The family relocated to Natchitoches Post, where Jean Baptiste's wife was buried on 18 Sep 1775.[3]

He moved to the Opelousas area sometime after 1788, possibly to be near his daughter, Marguerite, and her children. [4]

Jean Baptiste remarried while still in Opelousas on 15 January 1793 to Elisabeth Ledet.[5][6]

He was listed in the Opelousas censuses of 1793, 1796, and 1810. [4][7]

He wasn't the Jean Baptiste Rougeau who was buried on 28 June 1811 at the estimated age of 60 years,[8] because this would suggest he was born about 1751, and we know he married first in 1759. It seems possible that that one is another Jean Baptiste Rougeau, recorded on the left bank of the Mississippi in the 1788 census of Bayou Lafourche, who was aged 36 at the time (so born about 1752) and married to a Marie Alonzo.[9] Therefore it seems safest to say he died before 22 Jan 1815, the date his daughter Genevieve married and he was noted deceased.[10]

Known Children of Jean Baptiste and Marguerite Demouy

  1. Marguerite Rougeau

Known Children of Jean Baptiste and Isabelle Ledet

  1. Jean Baptiste Rougeau, fils b. 12 Apr 1791[11] Note that he was born before his parents wed and received the baptismal ceremonies after they had wed.
  2. Alexandre Rougeau who had already reached his majority when he wed Marie Anne Soileau, the daughter of Noel Soileau and Angelique Fontenot on 27 June 1814[12] suggesting he was born in the early 1790's. He later wed Nancy Reed, the widow of Denis Vidrine in 1844.[13]
  3. Caliste b. 1793; married (1) Marie Louise Pitre in 1818 and (2)Catherine McDaniel in 1822.
  4. Severin Rougeau was born 17 Jul 1795[14]
  5. Euphemie b. 1798; married Paulin Fontenot on 27 Oct 1818.
  6. Genevieve Rougeau married Louis Lucas dit Lelis Fontenot on 22 Jan 1815.[10]
  7. Marianne Rougeau baptized 7 Dec 1800[15]
  8. Euphrasie Rougeau b. 16 May 1804[16]
  9. Jean Baptiste Rougeau, the younger, b. 27 Aug 1805[17]

The list of children may not be complete, as the 1796 census of Opelousas shows the household contains 3 boys ages 1-15; 1 girl age 1-15; 2 men over 15; 1 woman over 15.[18] This suggests that perhaps Jean Baptiste had a son with his first wife (the other male over age 15), and there was another daughter aged 1-15, as Euphemie wasn't yet born.

Rougeau-3 and Rougeau-100 appear to represent the same person because: Same name. Estimated birth date is way off because there was a first marriage that made him older than expected for the marriage to Elisabeth.

Same marriage mentioned in source on Rougeau-100.
