Biography

Origins

Hugh Rowe was the son of John and Bridget Row. (He was named in his father's will.[2]) He was born about 1645 in England.[3][4]

Marriages and Children

Hugh married Rachel Langton 10 June 1667 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[5][6][7][3]

Hugh and Rachel were the parents of three children:
Rachel Rowe, 10 November 1668
Ruth Rowe, born 26 June 1671
Mary Rowe, born 5 February 1673.

Rachel died 7 March 1673/74.
On 16 September 1674 in Gloucester, Hugh married Mary Prince as his second wife.[8][6][7][3]

Hugh and Mary were the parents of nine children, including :
Abigail Rowe, born 19 December 1677
Joseph Rowe, born 19 May 1687
Mary Row, born about 1691

In 1675, Hugh enlisted to fight in King Philip's War. He received a grant of land at Kettle Cove for his services.[7]

On 3 September 1692, Hugh's mother-in-law, Margaret Prince, was arrested as a witch. Then sometime between 13 September and 3 November, Hugh's wife Mary and his former mother-in-law Rachel Vinson were arrested as witches. Finally, on 3 November, Hugh's 15 year old daughter Abigail was arrested as a witch. All four, along with others, were held in the jail in Ipswich, but eventually released without ever going to trial.[9]

Death

Hugh Rowe died 11 December 1696 in Gloucester, Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[10] His estate was entered into probate on 11 January 1697, with hs widow Mary appointed Administrator.[11]

Rowe-1456 and Rowe-403 appear to represent the same person because: Dates and parents are the same. Unfortunately the parents need to be merged as well.
