Note: Date from age at burial & marriage - only matching FamSearch/OPR entry is William s/o Walter RUNCHMAN, bap. Roxburgh, ROX, 17 Sep 1758.The other Roxburgh births to a Walter are 1762, then 1770s. Walter is not likely to be the Walter married to Mary LAING in Dumfries as they married in 1763.

If William belongs to Walter he has an older brother John b. 1757 and a younger brother Walter b. 1762.

However there is no proof, or circumstantial evidence yet found that indicates this is William's family.

Although merely indicative, the Scottish naming pattern would indicate that William's first son should be a Walter. Nary a Walter (after a possible father) or John (after a sibling) appear in his known children, only a William and a Charles. Lorna Jul 2012^{[3][4][5][6][7]}

Note: "As Mr Runciman, of Birchmore-house, near Woburn, was putting a gun into a bag, he shook it to get it in, and his man having been entrusted with it to shoot a dog, he had imprudently left it cocked, it went off, when the muzzle was close to his left foot, which was mangled in a most shocking manner. In this dreadful state he had the fortitude to ride to Woburn on horseback, to a surgeon, when he was obliged to undergo an amputation of the great toe and adjoining one. He is now in a fair way of doing well."

William obviously recovered as his death was 20 years later; Jackson's Oxford journal recording him as "an eminent agriculturalist, breeder, and grazier"^[10][11]

Take particular note of daughter Sophia as her page ties several of the family together - although I (Lorna) don't yet see how James fits into the family, there doesn't seem to be enough gaps in the births for him to fit at whatever age you believe from his census data, which latter states Edinburgh as his birthplace in at least one census.)^[12][13]

Their marriage allegation 10 Nov 1791 shows William as "of the Parish of Saint Paul Covent Garden batchelor aged thirty two" and Catherine Barbara as "of the Parish of Saint James Westminster in the same county aged twenty six years"^{[15][16][17][18]}
